Report: 310K 360s sold over Thanksgiving week
Microsoft confirms Black Friday performance figure, claims it doubled sales of Sony's PS3 for the week.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Nov 29, 2007 4:11 pm PT

Console hardware sales are getting a lot of scrutiny of late. Last year, the industry-tracking NPD Group began releasing monthly breakdowns of US retail hardware sales and found its numbers getting a lot of play in both mainstream and specialist press outlets.

With the unofficial start to the holiday retail season having kicked off after the Thanksgiving holiday, CNBC's Tech Check blog is giving a glimpse of how Microsoft's Xbox 360 fared over the week of "Black Friday," which ran from November 18 to 24.

In an addendum to a story on the console maker's various woes with Xbox 360 reliability, Tech Check reports that US consumers purchased more than 310,000 systems for the week of November 18. For the entire month of October, the NPD Group reported Xbox 360 sales of 366,000, compared with 519,000 Wiis and 121,000 PlayStation 3s.

If true, the 310,000 figure is near the 350,000 Wiis Nintendo reported were sold during Black Friday week. So far, Sony has not reported exact sales numbers for the PS3 but did say that sales of the console increased 245 percent during the seven-day period.

Microsoft confirmed the 310,000 figure to GameSpot, and went on to claim that "according to estimates from top retailers," the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 by a ratio of 2:1 for the week.

It's far from being a "pipe-dream".  Just because there isn't a set release date doesn't mean they aren't making it

Actually, I've had no issues with either. If the issues were bad, Microsoft wouldn't have sales figures like that, now would they?

Hmm, you mean that thing that hasn't happened to most XBOX users? The thing that Microfost repairs promptly at their expense? The thing they even extended the warranty to cover?

How's your PS3 firmware update crashes, random hangs and glitches, and hardware failures?

Whatever, keep eating your cell-chip-os and drinking the blue ray kool aid and think that there aren't issues with any specific console.

I'm still playing the 360 I bought on launch day. Microsoft did replace one hard drive for me along the way at no cost to me and I was never without my console.

I enjoy the Wii also but there are only a couple decent games for it. When will this huge installed base translate to some quality games?

I'm sitting out PS3 until I see more value for the price.

the replacement has been flawless.

I'll give you Halo 3, but BioShock is a PC game (as is Gears of War) that was ported over to 360. As for Forza - it, along with Project Gotham, will ALWAYS be an also-ran as long as Polyphony Digital are still making games.

Really, if you want to play that game - we're getting UTIII (a PC port) but we're also getting Haze, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, SOCOM, Tekken 6, God of War III, etc.

And we just got Uncharted

Let's see Halo have a hot blonde shooting an M79. Yep, didn't think so. And you get to see her in high def over HDMI

Uncharted is a great game - imagine the gun play of Gears of War with the platforming of Tomb Raider

Sure the 360 sales will be higher, people are buying the 2nd and 3rd 360s to replace those that died.  I'm still on my first PS3 so I haven't had the need to pick up a replacement.

Actually both systems are great, I just hate the Xbox controller so PS3 works great for me.

I don't know what your smoking, but Sony's net profit is down 25% in just one year.

They lost almost a $1Billion in the second quarter of this year on the PS3 alone.  Thats more than their net profit for the year!!

We'll see how long they can sustain the PS3 along with BD.  It's killing them financially.

How much do you think MS is losing over their extended warranty plan IIRC - Microsoft's gaming division has actually NEVER made a profit; they've always been in the red - that's why they have to charge you money to play online.

Sony on the other hand - they've sold over 100 million PS2s. And you can bet that once the heavy hitter exclusives like Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid start coming out, they'll move systems. I mean, PS3 has been out what - a year? I remember people saying that 360 would be a complete failure it's first year ("where are the good exclusives? I'm tired of playing Call of Duty 2") and then Gears of War came out around the one year anniversary of 360.

PS3 has Warhawk, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Uncharted, Folklore, etc. already - so it's not like we don't have any good games to play. And next year, while the Xbots are playing great exclusives like Alan Wake and Halo Wars and Fable 2 - we'll be playing Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo (and online will STILL be free)

Nintendo Wii owns all.

The only reason why the numbers for Wii are as low as they are is because that's all the stock Nintendo could muster.  The stores around me can't keep them in stock.  In fact, they haven't been in stock for a year, and now we're back into the Christmas season.  It's pretty cutthroat around here when it comes to the Wii.

got them both but I still play mostly on PC, FPShooters blow on consoles compared to PC especially in online play (battlefield series anyone), but it is more expensive to keep up with the new hardware on PC. since PC will continue to improve while consoles are stagnant, this is the reason you wont see crysis, the developers say they couldnt get it to run well on either of the consoles

when I do fire up a console It is usually PS3, it really is a better console when compared to the 360, it just came out too late to be the popular choice and XBOX's online play setup is much better than PS3's at this point, the PS3 has much better web browser setup though and they dont rape you with fees for everything.

It's pretty easy and hardly a joke. It may not be as 'pretty' as Live - but it has just as much functionality - I go to my buddy list and see who's playing what, then I can join them in their game or invite them to my lobby, send them messages, see their avatar - all that fun stuff - but for free. The ARFCOM PS3 clan is always playing COD4 online - just ask CaptForst, Billness, AnotherDude, etc.

Not much question in my mind, that at least for now, the Xbox 360 OWNS the PS3...

1. Sales: already mentioned ... despite the 360's red-ring-of-death problems (that have been corrected on new units) they are still outselling the PS3.

2. Online: Xbox Live is much more functional and user-friendly than the Sony version, and 6 bucks a month ain't exactly killing me.

3. Games: The 360 has all the coolest games Lots and lots of games. The PS3 has only a very few titles that are actually built for it's architecture.

That said, I do intend to get a PS3 fairly soon because I'm just a damned game junky. I have a PS2 and a PSP, so I am somewhat of a Sony fan as well as an Xbox fan (I have both the Xbox and Xbox 360). I loved Killzone on the PS2 so I'll have to get the PS3 for Killzone 2 if nothing else.

I've had to replace 2 Xbox 360s with problems but have to admit that MS support is very good. My first box got the red-ring-of-death and the second had the video signal go out and both were replaced within 2 weeks of calling them with free shipping to MS. No cost to me.

As for the Wii, I don't consider it a valid platform for a hardened gamer like myself. Graphics and processing power are weak, and I don't like the controllers - too much physical movement needed - not enough precision.

And one more thing... after working for about 3 straight hours on my laptop to get MS Flight Simulator X working, I have to say that gaming on the PC is NOT for me. On a console I plug in a disk and the damn thing works.

For the entire month of October, the NPD Group reported Xbox 360 sales of 366,000, compared with 519,000 Wiis and 121,000 PlayStation 3s

1) Wii - 519,000
2) Xbox 360 - 366,000

Nope, they just charge you an asinine price for everything instead of giving you a cheaper system and the option to opt out of certain things you would never use.

Sure the 360 sales will be higher, people are buying the 2nd and 3rd 360s to replace those that died.  I'm still on my first PS3 so I haven't had the need to pick up a replacement.

Actually both systems are great, I just hate the Xbox controller so PS3 works great for me.

Uhh..if your Xbox dies you get a free one...
