I am at work But I have been on my 2 week notice for the last 2 1/2 MONTHS so If they get mad I guess I will realy leave and let them work this work schedule with one less person.

I don't usually go online at work (kind of hard to get Internet access in the cab of a locomotive) but has anyone tried www.safeweb.com? I've heard others pretty knowledgable about computers say that it does a pretty good job of masking your tracks on the Internet. Not that it makes you completely anonymous, mind you, just makes it pretty tough for others to trace your steps and see where you have been.

Is it bad to be an AR-15 owner, operator, and entusiast? What exactly am I doing wrong by being here? I don't really feel I have anything to be ashamed of or worry about.
(FWIW, My Co. -bigger and more uptight in a corporate, P.C. way than most, believe me- has written policy stating that it's A-OK for employees to utilize their e-mail and internet access for private purposes as long as it doesn't interfere with their, or others, work.) |

Although there's not much I can do about the spammed garbage (why are you clickin on those topics anyhow!?!?!?!) there is an effort in the works for a "covert" entry into the site...
You can actually get into the site now through this new "backdoor" but the images and code have not yet been written for "neutralization" of the site... I'm in charge of the network, so the only persona that can fire me is me.
And yes, we do track where everyone goes. But it's a waste of time to check the logs. Unless somebody complains, the filter usually blocks sites such as this. Although I have a nice collection of porn sites that people try to visit on a regular basis here... Av. |

working for the gubmint has up and downsides. I get great speed of connections off the LAN but all of the sites do get logged. The problem that was brought up first is that the company you work for does own everything that you do. They can go after you for something as simple as using their electricity for your wastfull web surfing, can't say I know of anyone that has actually been busted for it, but the possibilty exists.

In my shop I just trust the users. If they are screwing around on the net....no problem. As long as they get their job done in a satisfactory manner nobody cares.
Keeping track of web access was one of the first things that was discussed when I came here, boss didn't want to do it and I agreed. All of the users here are free to do whatever they want with their machines, as long as it is legal and doesn't interfere with network operations. |

Since we are a school district, we have to watch our employees a lot more closely. The last thing I want is to be slapped with a lawsuit because little Billy was looking at porn in class.

There are very few websites I can access from work, and this ain't one of them. I think almost everything is blocked by default. When I try to access a site outside the intranet, a page pops up with a form to be filled out and you have to explain why the website you want to visit is work-related. Then it will be unblocked only if it is approved. [:(]

I too don't have much to sweat, being the network guy and all. In fact we don't filter, block, or monitor anyone or anything.
I visit here, firingline.com, kitco (goldbugs site) check my bank balance, credit cards and brokerage account all from my office. Besides, if anyone wanted to start monitoring me I know how to disable it, although I know most corporations use Windows NT systems set up so users are locked out of making system changes unless they are IT people. But it should be possible to see if you are running any monitoring software, even if you can't unload it. Heck, we use Win 98, with no security. Our "firewall" is a $300 dsl router, and Zonealarm on each pc. I don't know if I can even block any urls. [scratches head] I also keep private stuff on my pc, but it is encrypted with 140 bit encryption, and in hidden directories. In fact some of my work files are treated the same way, for the same reasons- my pc is the one we use to do wire transfers! And any deleted files are wiped to DoD specifications. Browser history files cleaned every night. Not that I am paranoid [:D] |

Most decent web proxy/blocking apps will catch that one because both www.ar15.com and www.jobrelatedstuff.com point to the same IP address, and it seems most of the blocking apps have gone to using straight IP addresses. If you make www.jobrelatedstuff.com point to a different IP address assigned to the server it should work, at least for a while. God Bless Texas |

I'm only a backfill here, so I was given an Ultra 1 when I started in August. They decided to give me an Ultra 10 here since they plan on keeping me on longer and of the new guys I do most of the work. At my old job I had on my desk at least one Ultra 5, two compaq DeskPro's (Running Win2k and OpenBSD for development and testing), and a whole bunch of Netra T1 105's. I had a picture I took right before I got laid off that was pretty impressive. I even worked my unamaerican.com stickers into the picture.

I was just informed by my boss that although we have porn filters on the Internet feed I am authorized to attempt to open porn links, and to use our live servers to browse anything including porn links.
I am a systems engineer, and need freedom to make sure things are working or not working as required. I am the one who gets called during off hours to "fix" external links on our Web site that have changed from appropriate educational content to something other than appropriate educational content. ar15.com is one of the best educational sites on the Internet, especially if you want to learn about AR-15s. |

Well, since I work in a College Computer lab, my job is to help people out, and since there that doesn't happen to often, I get to surf where ever I want, and that is usually here. Plus, I bring in my computer to do the surfer, since it is faster than the ones they have here. Hehehe

My thinking has always been that as long as I get the work done that they're paying me for, a little web browsing should not be a problem. Luckily, the two companies I've worked for for the past few years have agreed.
As to ripping them off for electricity and machine usage, they're not paying me for the work I do from home, so I figure they still come out ahead in the end. Besides, that's a pretty bogus argument anyway, as the machine would be sitting there sucking power anyway. At the company where I was an IT guy, we didn't have any monitoring software on our systems. We figured that we hired grown-ups and expected them to behave as such. It's a rare employee that is perfect in every way except that they keep surfing porn in the office. Most people with that sort of work ethic tend to get laid off for other reasons anyway. |
