Check your connection properties, it might be set to automatically reconnect.

What OS?

Is it a Compaq Presario by chance?

Go to internet Explorer properties, connection, and tell it to never dial a connection.  This will make you manually dial... but that's less annoying.

To actually fix it...check your startup group.  There are many programs that run in the startup group, that attempt to send or gather information on startup to the developer... or to check for updates.

You can delete them one by one, or all of them, and see if that fixes it.  Then restore the ones you want fromt he recycle bin.

Go into the system tray.  Hold your mouse over each item.  Make sure you REALLY need it running.  Go into real player and kill startcenter.  You will find this frees up a lot of resources, and the computer will run less buggy, and faster.

FDISK?

Or if it's a 'puter from a major company such as Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP, etc.  They put a ton of extra stuff that you won't use in your lifetime...

The steps to find/get rid of them are:

NOTE: It is possible to uncheck something that is normally needed to run your computer.  However, this is "usually" easy to repair by doing these steps again and putting the required checkmark back.

START>RUN

Type in MSCONFIG and click OK

In the pop-up window, click on the option that reads SELECTIVE STARTUP

Click the STARTUP tab

The list is all the programs that load and run every time you boot your computer.

To see a guideline of what each one does go to this web site:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

Take the checkmarks out of the stuff that isn't needed, click OK and reboot.

Seriously, I had a problem with my modem making alot of noise into my phone line when I tried to talk. This happened after I changed to Cable Internet. I just unplugged the damned modem and haven't had the problem since.

The freakiest thing was for a while when I ran Office 2000, it tried to Install Calendar Maker 2.5 every time I started Office. I figure some program was crossed, so I uninstalled both and reinstalled Office 2000. Haven't had the problem since.

If you use IE, Try going to tools= Internet options= connections tab= Highlite your ISP and click on settings, Uncheck automatically detect settings AND use automatic config script. and see if that dosen't stop the problem.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop,1gig athlon.Running windows me.I did what Robbie sugg. That took care of it.It also took care of some of the Sony keyboard commands.I think im going to burn some cd's and start over new. Then I can set it up exactly like I want.

One other problem. The Sony emblem was loose on the monitor so I took it off and it says HAL under there.Whats a HAL.Now my web cam follows me when I walk across the room.
