Yup, crooked is right.
They work really well too... almost too well. I have video of me shooting a fullauto AK and the muzzle actually goes down during firing.

for Westman431:
I have a US made slant comp. on may SAR-1. i dont shoot full auto, so i cant really tell a difference. it does however reduce "dust signature". they make the rifle look better in my opinion. i recomend adding a recoil buffer from Buffer Technologies. the buffer reduces felt recoil.
On my Hungarian Kalishnikov, i have a muzzle brake from Enterprise Arms. this brake really works well and keeps the muzzle put! it is loud though. it is shorter than the AK-74 brake and does much the same job.
remember that if your rifle is post-ban. you will have to install a US made brake on a pistol gripped rifle, with at least four weld spots around the circumfrence, or half the diameter of the muzzle. weld or silver solder at over 1,100 degrees. according to ATF regulation 921(a) if my memory serves me correctly. if installing a US made brake you must have six US parts including the brake. for more info please ask CampyBOB on the AK foroum. he knows quite a bit.
