Would-be copper thief knocks power out for 5,800 in Lexington

Someone tried to steal copper from an electrical substation off Waveland Museum Lane on Wednesday morning, causing a power outage for 5,800 people, Kentucky Utilities spokesman Cliff Feltham said.

Feltham said police had found evidence of a break-in and tools on the ground at the substation, although no copper was taken. Police have notified hospitals to watch for a burn victim, he said.

The power outage lasted from 4:40 to 7 a.m., affecting people in the area between Nicholasville and Clays Mill roads from the Fayette-Jessamine county line to Tiverton Way.

Idiots think they can go steal the copper and get it to the recycling center without anyone noticing the POWER OUTAGE!!!!!

We have been having all kinds of problems with theft of copper in the High Desert area(Mojave Desert) of Barstow/Victorville/Ft Irwin NTC area of Calif.

Here the population is fairly sparse because it is desert, but theft of copper is a an all time high from cell phone towers, farming equipment, new construction etc.  The govt has been coming down fairly hard on the recycling companies and demanding that they record the DL and license numbers of people unloading large amounts of copper and calling the local PD when they suspect stolen copper.

But the problem is that the dealers are reluctant to report them because they know who these people are and are sometimes paying them way below market rates.

I work for an electrical contractor and we constantly have tweakers coming in asking about wire. We have to put the scrap wire into huge heavy containers with double locks outside in a secure barbwired fenced in area with cameras just to keep them out.  They are persistant little bastards
