Are these setups a scam or do they really work?

Adult Herpes Finder?  Please tell me that you aren't that bad off.  Just find a fat chick.

ETA:

Yes, they apparently work, and I know two people who met and boned skanks right that evening.  One came down with a horrible case of genital warts and the other got teh herps.  Bad idea.

I'm a bigtime internet dater, but I would NOT go to Adult Friend Finder unless I ever get a hankering for a case of teh AIDZ.

Hot Or Not, Match.com, True, PlentyOfFish, or Myspace.

Ah, another fine example of people who think that meeting random women from the internet, regardless of site, having sex with them sans condom, and then being shocked and surprised when they end up with a nasty STD. Is this a great country or what?

My buddy signed up for the crap after I warned him not to. Nothing bad other than getting scammed for the membership fee, but now he spends countless hours cruising the site, and reporting how "this one" is gonna give him the pie....

I've looked at AFF before, but I didn't really find anything or anybody there that was to my liking.  This was when I was between relationships (after a break-up) many years ago.

Always, always use a freebie e-mail that you don't give a damn about for this stuff.  The box will get filled up with spam.  Don't use your real e-mail.

These set-ups aren't exactly a scam, but there is a shadiness involved due to the very nature of the site and the reasons that people are there in the first place.  There's a fine line between casual sex and prostitution.

I've had better luck finding people on regular socializing sites as opposed to dating or sex sites.  With socializing sites, even if nothing happens in terms of dating or sex, you can still make some pretty cool friends.

Dedicated dating-specific sites like Match.com really suck in my experience.  I've never managed to meet anybody off of those.  I've probably used them all at one time or another.

I've actually had a lot of luck in the past with studentcenter.  MySpace can work, too.  Facebook is a possibility as well; you might start talking to someone who you notice is on your friend's buddy list, for example.

Warts and Herpes are the [not]same thing...and you can get it orally also.

Edited my incorrect statement.

Sure, and had a lot of fun doing it.  Gave us AFF, went to Yahoo, and met the woman who is now my wife.   I really, really enjoyed the search.

Never used an online service.  However, I find it hard to believe two people you know run around announcing their STD's.  I call shenanigans.

Dude, I didn't ask them to tell me and I didn't want to know.  I made the mistake of asking both why they weren't dating any more given what poon-hounds they used to be.

OK. You guys are right. I got confused. I was thinking that HSV also presented with a wart, as I typically think of the HPV as a condyloma and not a wart.

My bad.

Not really, they seem kinda scam-ish. I set up an account on Fling a while ago without paying anything... it doesn't let you look at the e-mails, but I seemed to get an awful lot of messages from supposed women in other states. I didn't feel very motivated to pay to find out what they were saying.

I hear they've also been busted doing various shady things, like keeping accounts active after they've been deleted by the real owner, changing the location of accounts so searches even in small towns find remarkable numbers of 20something girls looking to hook up, creating entire fake accounts with pics from porn sites, letting porn site peddlers set up fake accounts to direct people to their commercial sites, etc.

But I suppose there are probably some real women in there somewhere

my friend would use it all the time, I thought it was pretty disgusting because the girls were very skanky and some of them were old (in my opinion)   (40's)

but it just seemed so weird and dangerous, seems like you could get setup to get rolled very easily...

Don't you people have women anywhere near where you live?

I mean seriously...get outside.  There really are women out there.  I promise you.

I haven't dated in just over ten years, but I remember one thing for sure...the more women you talk to, the more women you can screw.  It is really that simple.

If you have a hard time talking to real people out of the blue get a part time job that requires you to interact with a lot of people.  Two things will happen.  You will have extra cash for guns, hookers, or blow and you will talk to girls...making it easier to fuck em.  I am married, but I work at a bar part time and let me tell you if I was single or the type of shitbag that would cheat on his wife it'd be way too easy.
