it's a US M1 steel helmet thats been painted a navy battleship grey color, and the top has large black stenciled numbers 2ND ? the front has a gold leaf decal

somebody told me 2ND might be for second executive officer? was this helmet used on an aircraft carrier or some other type of ship?

Yes, the gold leaf is the Lt Cmdr rank insignia.

Would not suprise me, 2nd could be anything, 2nd xo, 2nd Nav, guess would be a ship related function.

We painted our hats on the bridge as well with names of who they went to, made handing them out in GQ ezer.

the shell has a stainless rear seam, so that would make it a late WWII shell 1944- 1945 era, but the liner and chinstrap is Vietnam era.
