Probably yes. If it was so that I could help take care of her or something similar than I would not be embarrassed. But I would be embarrassed if I was just freeloading off of her so that I didn't have to pay for rent or food.

ETA: Another situation where I would not be embarrassed is if there was no way that I could live on my own (whether it be because my saving were wiped out in a divorce, I just lost my job, medical issues prevent me from caring for myself, etc.). However, once I regained the ability to live on my own, then I would do so.

Probably not.

I would either be deathly ill, or a spineless, lazy, good for nothing loser afraid to go out into the world and my view of reality would be so twisted it would seem perfectly natural.

But then, I'm 51 and living with my MIL, so...

How about if your parents lived with you? I moved my parents in with me when their foundation went out and needs repair but cannot get a contractor anytime soon? Plus mom loves the house as well.

If someone lives with his mother because he is too damn lazy (or too cheap) to live on his own, that is one thing. But if it is because the mother has some sort of medical problem and needs help, that is another. If you can afford to take care of your mother when she needs it and you don't, then words can barely begin to describe what a miserable POS human being you are.

The only problem is that for those that think nothing about living at home with their mother, either for their own convenience or because they are too cheap, they are would not be embarassed by such a thing. In fact, I think that many would be proud of themselves for doing such a thing.

I have a friend who still lives at home at 42. He supports a retired ill mother, father, and his sister.

Personally I would prefer to send them to managed care and live on my own.

I lived at home until I was 25. I was planning to move out on my own a couple of years earlier, and I could feel the need to do it. But my mom convinced me to stay there until I had enough money to buy a house rather than blowing it on rent.

But then I met my wife and we decided to get married. I moved out pretty quick.

Depends.

Not if one of us was sick and needed someone around.

But then an important question is "how much rent could I charge her?

One advantage is how they get hard of hearing. No more "Nothing, Ma".

Disadvantage: When she claps her hands, my lights go out, too.
