Buy it and a couple gig memory and install XP...

excellent way to void your warranty with gateway.  if you change or upgrade your os on their system under warranty they require you to reinstall the preinstalled OS to replace parts

I wouldn't sweat it. I don't buy the extended warranty on my toasters. $299 damn near puts it in that ballpark.

I'm no IT geek, but even I know 512megs isn't enough memory for Vista.

Hell, I figure 2 gigs minimum.  Vista will eat up nearly one by itself.

GREAT price, but I'm not sold on the setup.

ok guys, i was wanting a laptop on the cheap. would i be better off just spending another $400 and getting something from Sams?

i'm usually a guy who believes in "you get what you pay for"......so am pretty skeptical.........

I know from personal experience...Vista is a memory whore...run it and your computer will choke on it and die if you have anything less than 2gb of ram

Wipe the hard drive clean of Vista,

and install Ubuntu Linux.

Seriously, it's not hard stuff.  I'm nothing close to being a programmer or computer geek, and I get around in Linux just fine.
It uses less resources, and can do everything windows can.

I'm actually typing this from linux right now.

....which costs 8x more than this?  We are not comparing a $300 laptop to a $2400 computer are we?

I posted this laptop here as a heads up to people on a budget who are looking for a cheap internet box.  Its not the best computer you can buy, BUT IT IS THE BEST YOU CAN BUY ON A BUDGET

Nice strawman.  You can buy an Apple for less than half of that.z

You would be buying a 300 dollar paper weight. DO NOT BUY THAT LAPTOP.  The Amount of Ram on that computer is just enough to run vista Home, even if you did upgrade the ram you would still be using a complete stripped down OS, AND have a processor that is a flaming piece of crap. You would be much much better off just buying what ever 599-699 dual core with 1 gig of ram laptop that bestbuy/Circuit usualy has, save your self alot of stress.

Buy an intronix.  You can piss all over it and through it out your third floor window

being serious.       gateway wouldn't sell the computer if it didn't halfway run

i would most definatley buy this over a apple.   like posted already i would upgrade the memory and possibly load fedora or something similar.

my first move would be to create the restore cd or dvd.   that way i can always go back to the original OS.

thanks for posting the link either way

Jesus H. Fucking Christ.  If you don't like it, don't buy it.

First thing I'd do is pull the HD, plug in the one from my old notebook, and install Debian.

For 299 who cares about a warranty?  That's a disposable laptop.

Just to clarify.  Gateway's Phone Based Technical Support is all North American based.  I believe they are in Iowa, NY and Florida.
