A cargo plane is flying along transporting 1,000 pigeons.

Suddenly, all the pigeons get startled and start flying around in their cages.

Is the plane now lighter?

A B-52 is flying along carrying 20 bombs.  The bomb bay opens up and 10 of them are "pickled".  Is it lighter?  

To your question, no.  The cargo plane is pressurized and is for all intents and purposes a "closed" system.  Also 1000 pigeons don't weigh enough to make a noticeable difference even if they were all ejected overboard at once.  Now, if a cargo airplane ingested 1000 pigeons into the engines at one time, there would be some changes in gravitational forces, and some shifting around of fecal matter inside flight suits.

What if the aircraft isn't pressurized?


Then the pigeons all pass out from hypoxia and can't fly anyway.

Does the plane get lighter while the pigeons fall from their perches to the floor of the plane?

No, the mass of the pidgeons is still interacting with the mass of the air in the closed system of the aircrafts fuselage.

+1 the downward force to keep the pigeons aloft is pushing on the floor of the aircraft.

What is the altitude?...

Is it using BIOfuel?..

Are these carrier pigeons?..

Is there an in flight meal?..

Will the flight in question be crossing any international date lines?..

PETA certified cages?...

Are the pilots wearing Crocks?..

Have the pilots used a treadmill in the last 24 hrs?..

There are just too many variables to the question, but all things being equal, I say no change in weight.
