So I took a trip over to Seattle for a Mariners game a couple weeks ago and entered some contest as you walked in the gate thinking nothing of it....

Fast forward a to last week, and a friend who I took gets a phone call saying she won a free 3-day, 2-night trip airfare and hotel included

Fast forward to 30 minutes ago, I get the same phone call saying I was one of 25 people selected to win this trip, and that I need to go pick up my tickets tomorrow

The drawing was through some place called TrendWest, I spoke to some friends who have heard of these things before, and its supposedly some timeshare company or something

Anyone ever delt with a situation like this? If so, did you actually get your free trip, or will it not be worth my time driving 1.5 hours each way to a meeting tomorrow afternoon?

There's more strings attached to this than a box of tampons...

First rule of contest prizes:  If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS!

Go to the meeting.

If get to be a timeshare sale start asking the airplane and treadmill question.

That should get you out of there, if not enjoy the fighting between the 2 sides.

You have any outstanding warrants?  I seem to remember a COPS episode where they did some shit like this to round up wanted folks.

I won one of those trips once and then they told me it was going to cost $400 + to go on the trip. I laughed uproariously at them and hung up.

I am a representative of the deposed prince of Nigeria, who wants you to hold his money during these troubled times, but dues to law can only write a check for $10,000.

Could you please send back the change?

Basically, you get a free trip, but you have to attend a timeshare presentation, which will culminate with hard sell tactics in the end.

In Hawaii, my wife and I did a couple of these things, to get discounts and such.  Saved a few hundred bucks, which was nice, but they really do turn on the sales tactics, and get forceful.  As long as you can say no, and aren't going to be pressured, it's fine to go to.

Prior to meeting me, my wife and her sister attended a presentation in Florida.  Yup, you guessed it.  We are oh-so-proud owners of a timeshare in Florida, that we haven't gone to a single time in the 5+ years we have been married.  Only good thing is we have gotten our money's worth by swapping it for other places, but we aren't exactly ahead on the thing, more like just breaking even.

I'm hoping that I do get the trip and they can bring on whatever kind of sell technique they want...

I'm 23, and in so much debt from student loans that I wouldn't even think about a timeshare for the next 40 years of my life

Hell, I'm glad I killed my elk early this year so I don't have to go to the grocery store and buy any beef for the year i'm so broke

Scam.

Just say no.  If it sounds too good to be true, then it is.
