What's the best time of day to visit the zoo?

I want to get some good photos.  Every time I've been to the zoo, the animals are all sleeping.

Is there a time of day when the animals are up and roaming?

Call the zoo and find out at which time they begin feeding the animals. They will be used to the routine and will probably be very active just prior or during the feedings, and probably a little while after.
