I found a used HK 45 Tactical in excellent used condition for $790, vs. $939 new.  Is this a good price for a well maintained HK, or should I cough up the $150 extra  for new?
Also, anyone have opinions about this gun?

You have to ask, why is the person selling it?

He traded it in on a P7M8

$790 for an excellent used condition Tac isn't a terrible deal.  I wouldn't call it terrific, but it's not bad.  What year model is it?  Does it have the internal locking mechanism?  Are all the parts with it like the extra o-rings, 2 mags, pouch, cleaning kit, etc.. that came from the factory or is it just the pistol?

$939 for a new one seems a little high though.  I think you can find a better deal online.

It includes everything listed, although I am not sure about the extra o rings.  My dealer says this guy is a frequent buyer/trader who takes great care of his guns.
I do not know what year or if it has internal locking - do these add $value, and which are the best options/variations to look for?

I have 2 consecutive serial # Tacticals (one for the wife, she thinks it's romantic) and they are the most outstanding pistols I have ever owned.  My Gunsmith shoots competition & when he recently installed night sights he shot the tightest 25 yd group ever.

Even if it's been shot a bit you will not regret the purchase!

Well the o-rings are cheap.  I'd feel ripped off if I spend more than 5 bucks a piece.

I personally don't think that the locking mech adds any value, but it's a newer "feature" to make the pistol more politically acceptable.  If the pistol has the internal lock, it also has a long plastic key.

Here are the variants

Standard is variant 1.

Date code is A=0 B=1 C=2 D=3 E=4 F=5 G=6 H=7 I=8 K=9

So if you've got a date code of KH it is a 97 model.

I thought there was gonna be a single action only at some point.  I wonder why they never made ambidexterous controls.

Tactical .45 is great. But be warned, it will lead to suppressors.

My USP Tactical shoots better than I do. It's amazingly accurate and consistent. I posted up a picture here (when photopoint was still free) of the first group I shot out of it. It was five shots into 13/16ths of an inch at 15 yards.

There are all kinds of accessories you'll find yourself convincing yourself that you absolutely can't live without... a light, holsters, more mags, a muzzle break from CCF, a thread protector for when you're not using the muzzle break, another holster or two... it's a sickness.

Where???  I'll jump on it for that price, with some left over for a hicap mag or two

Here is my opinion.

The ability to accept two more rounds
does not justify the cost
of "hicap" magazines which were never
released to the public because HK hates you.

I don't know why anyone would buy the USP Tactical.....unless they planned on attaching a suppresor to it.

I own a compact USP.45, and have shot both the USP Full size.45 and the USP Tactical .45....as well as the SOCOM. The SOCOM is way too big in my opinion for most practical use.

The full size USP's shoot identical groups as the Tactical, at a cheaper price and without the mostly useless threaded barrel. Yeah, they look cool, but is it for show and tell, or for defense?

Maybe I'm missing something, but after firing the entire HK .45 line, I doubt it.

Reasons for me buying the  HK tactical
1.  reputation
2.  love my Hk compact
3.  yes, you're right - looks cool, especially with tactical light mounted.  It's my 40th b-day gift to myself, so I am looking for something a little different

This will be the first gun purchase my wife approves of.  For ten years she has complained about my "interest " in guns.  Now I tell her I'm having a mid life crisis, and she can pick whether I get a few good guns, a sports car, or a mistress.  She promptly picked the guns!!!

I may have to pull this trick again when I'm 50...

I looked at the Tactical and the Expert. Bought the Expert because I knew I'd never get a  suppresor. It's a great gun.

I love mine and wouldn't sell it, but I also wouldn't pay $900 for a new one. Your used price is about what I paid new.
[pistol]
It does look really cool, doesn't it?
[smoke]
BTW, has anyone seen fake cans for it?

That would bring up the coolness factor even more.
