AR-10 would be my first choice, though remember that all collections need to have an AK. (always good to train with the weapon of the enemy)

I would buy the AK in 5.45 platform, cheapest on the market to shoot for the time being. The .308 AR10 would make for an expensive addition both to run and to purchase.

I've thought about an AK in 5.45 but how long will that ammo be around for, is it in current production by anyone? What country still uses it? |

I've got an AK, not an AR10.
That said, this is like asking "should I get an AK74 or an AR15?" Get what works best for your situation and needs. |

I don't have anything that's a "long rage" rifle, that's what made me think of the AR10, I really like the .308 round and I can imagine that an AR10 with some decent glass on it would be a very accurate long range weapon. Once again the AK would just be an open sight short range toy. |

I'm always a .308 guy, but an AR-10 is going to be an expensive mouth to feed.

+1 If you don't have any AK going on you should get one. It's a good thing to practice with every now and again. I don't have a "high end" gun collection with the possible exception of a couple of my ARs, but I got a WASR just so I could always know how one operates and shoot some basic drills with it every so often. |

I've had a WASR a few years back and sold it, also had a Saiga .223 that I sold earlier this year so the AK platform is nothing new to me. I've also thought about a M1A

I've been having the same debate with myself. In my case, I'm going to buy an AK. Later, when I decide to get a 308 rifle, I'm going to buy a SOCOM-16.

I guess I don't really see how they are common enough to make this an either or type thing. To me it is more like AR10 or CETME or FAL.
To me, at least, the AK47 and the AR10 are entirely different weapons. If you head to head compare an AR10 will do things an AK can't do and I can't think of what an AK can do that an AR10 can't. More range More accurate More efficient round AK47 is fun to shoot makes a lot of noise and is cheaper to run. None of those though are qualities that I really look for in buying a weapon. All guns to me are fun to shoot so that is a wash. Buying an AK47 would be more a well round collection thing that is about it. |

Golden Tiger is selling new production in 5.45. It's great stuff in 7.62x39, read good reports of it in 5.45 too. Better'n Wolf.

As mentioned elsewhere on this forum, Robinson has some VEPRs in .308 and 5.45 for sale, found in the closet or some such. Not cheap at $1000, but I bet it's still less than an AR10, and it's a heckuva gun. Get the best of both worlds. I wish I'd got a .308 VEPR when they were still ~$600.

7.62x39 ammo is no longer cheap. .308 of similar quality is really not that much more expensive. Compare S&B or Brown Bear. You can shoot cheap ammo in a AR-10, but even with quality ammo in an AK you will only get mediocre accuracy. |

If it's going to be for SHTF and a range toy, get an AK. Cheap ammo, cheap mags, durable and it's not another AR platform. It's always fun to diversify the amory.

M14/M1A. As someone posted, part of the appeal of the 7.62x39mm guns in the past, for me, was the cheap ammo. I've had SKS's and AK's and even a 7.62x39mm AR, they were fun to mess around with, but now if you're going to have to spend that much for ammo, you might as well pick up a nicer rifle. No offense to the AK fans, to each their own. Although if you did go with an AK, I would say get one of the higher end ones, if you're debating between $1500+ or whatever AR-10's cost, then I would say consider spending the money on a high end AK.
I've had too many bad experiences with AR-10's to even consider buying one, and I absolutely love my M14. |

MSRP is about $1200(from DPMS) , so if the round count is low , it would be a pretty good deal. If it's a Frankengun , probably not. ETA - Local dealer here is selling DPMS LR-308 rifles at about $1050 new , FWIW. |

Just look at the ballistics for the 123 gr 'sawed off' pill compared to the full grown 168 gr. You'll know which to choose.

Russia still uses it and once they switch to 5.56 it will flood the market. Currently it is the cheapest surplus auto rifle ammo on the market. For what you'll pay for that AR10 with ten magazines you could buy a 5.45 AK, ten mags, and seven cases of ammo. .308 in anything sucks due to weight and cost of operation. |

It is the ticket. Check Centerfiresystems, WASR2 $329, case of 1080 5.45x39 $139.99. If you want a nicer one get the Tantal from Atlanticfirearms or find an Arsenal 105 or SAR2 on Gunbroker when they pop up. Hell spend $1500 bucks and you'll have one with enough ammo to last quite a while. |

Isn't the AK74 (5.45 x 39) the current main Russian battle rifle? If so, the surplus ammo & new production (Wolf-Golden Tiger) will be around (and cheaper that US made Ammo) for many years to come. |
