As a side note, anyone who posts a link to Maddox's review of the iPhone gets punched in the face. I've read it, it's funny, but I'm looking for the opinions of those who use an iPhone currently or have thought over getting one.

My local AT&T store has both models in stock and I'm wicked tempted to get either one. I figure if I am going to spend $300 for the 4GB, I mine as well spend the extra $100 to double my capacity.

I played with one in the store today and it was very cool. The widgets were neat (checking the weather and stocks in 2 seconds time was awesome!). My biggest concern is AT&T's EDGE network, with 5 bars (I was literally 50 yards away from a tower) the connection was pretty slow. Even though it was better than 56k, it still took a bit to load stuff like CNN.com or the Drudge Report.

Right now I'm torn...I already have AT&T and if I got the phone I would be able to transfer my account info (such as my rollover minutes) without issue. My plan would only cost about $10 and would include the unlimited internet. At the same time I would be spending $400 on the phone (much improved from $600, but still a lot) and would also be locked into another 2 years on the phone.

It's not a 3G phone; only uses EDGE. Personally, I wouldn't get a phone (in this day and age) that isn't 3G. But that's just me.

I checked one out at work for a week a couple times, and I'm not impressed. Stuff I don't like:

Slow wireless - no 3G

Hard for my fat fingers to "zoom" the browser instead of clicking on something

lots of freaking actions to type English.

Doesn't sync with Exchange or Blackberry (yes, you can use IMAP. Thanks, not cutting it)

non-removable battery?

Stuff I liked:

Smallish.

Full-fledged web browser, even if nothing supports it correctly

the finish is tough - this isn't a replay of the 'touch it and it scratches' iPod nanos

visual voicemail

Honestly, I'd pass for now. The lack of exchange integration means carrying two devices, which is a no-go.

The reason they use 2G is battery life. Anything that takes more CPU burns the battery faster.

That said, I agree. It's ass.

Yes, until that area is upgraded to support 3G, or until you travel somewhere that does.

Yes, until that area is upgraded to support 3G, or until you travel somewhere that does.

In my case, the vast majority of the time I'm within range of WiFi networks anyway, so the 3G issue doesn't matter to me.

This doesn't really add anything to the discussion, but there is only one thing holding me back from buying one: the fact that I can't use the phone with my current cell phone provider. I have to use AT&T.
I don't have anything against AT&T, I just don't want to switch carriers. I have had the same service since I had a brick phone, same number and all that. Don't want to change.

As far as the cost, it is very resonable. Every couple years I buy a new phone. I don't go for the "free" phone that is a piece of shit and requires me to sign a contract committing me to so many years of service. I simply pay a couple hundred dollars to buy the phone I want with no strings attached. I don't give a shit about the money. The current Iphone is about the same price as the last phone I bought. I figure, if I am going to spend that same money on some phone, it might as well be the current fad phone.
I need a new phone right now, but it won't be an Iphone because of the AT&T thing.

I wouldn't get a dang thing that required me to be on AT&T's network- around here, you know when someone is calling you from an AT&T phone. I don't even have to beat around the bush, I just say "I can't understand you, you have an AT&T cell, huh?" And they say yes, all exasperated.

On a side note, why are they still called AT&T? I mean, who uses telegraphs, anymore?

I've been Anti-Macintosh my entire life, and I still am.

My brother gave me an iPhone for my birthday.

I really got to say, it's a nifty tool to have.

I find that the internet is fast enough for any processing that I have to do. Takes me just a few seconds to load up anything on ARFCOM.

My first real experience was at the airport, surfing through porn while listening to Slayer.

My only complaint is that the microphone is sensitive, and is very loud sometimes to other people on the line.

But yeah, I enjoy it.

As far as waiting for something better, what's the point.

Everything you get will be superseded by another product in the near future, so what do you do? Use a Hewlett Packard computer from 1988, and drive a Ford Model T, just because in a few years a car better than those will come out than now?

Nope, the phone gets a little warm when you're on youtube for about 2 hours but it doesn't get hot.

As far as scratching, not at all. I had an idiot friend put out a God damn cigarette on my phone by accident because he was drunk. I keep it in my pocket with my keys as well, no scratching at all on the screen.

so, the OP asked for feedback from people that had actually used one. If I count correctly, there are two of us in this thread (three if Phoebus has, this hasn't been explicitly stated). What is everyone else adding to this thread?

I have used one, I received one as a bonus for a new consulting contract.

I haven't used it but maybe once or twice to surf when not on WiFi. Speed on WiFi is great.

Call quality is as good or better than any other cell I've had.

Media playing is great.

It is incredibly scratch-reistant.

The best part for me is the interface. As someone who's spent some time in interface design, I can't stand the useless crap other phones give us for interaction. The idea of an interface that is 100% flexible to the task at hand is great.

If I hadn't been given this one, now that the price drop had occurred I'd probably buy one. My wife's folks and my folks are on AT&T, so we use them anyway.

I'm a Mac guy, and I don't think I'll be buying an iPhone. Primary reason being that I'm not a fan of AT&T. Secondary reason being the price of the thing vs. what it actually does.

As it is, I generally reserve my cell phone for emergency usage anyways. I have no need for the additional features offered by an iPhone. I just need a communication device, and that's what I have.

If I had an iPhone, it would spend a lot of time sitting at home, collecting dust. The iPhone is a bit larger than my current cell phone, and I like being able to drop my phone into a pocket without having to worry about the size of the thing.

I have no need or desire to be "connected" 24/7. If I want to do that, I'll just stay on the computer all day. I enjoy having the freedom to step out and away for a while without having to worry about people trying to track me down. So as you guys can guess, I'm not a regular cell phone user, because I don't want to be.

If the iPod music and video features are important for you and also happen to need a phone, the iPhone is great.

If that isn't so important and you just want a phone and a good e-mail tool, get the Nokia Communicator.

I went to two different Apple stores on two different dates to sample pre-price cut Iphones. The Apple stores have functioning Iphones, along with other Apple products like Ipods and computers.

I'm not really impressed. I'm not a big fan of the whole touchscreen deal, and I found it tough to access stuff. For some reason, the demo models failed to show YouTube for example.

Ive had one for about a month, the problems that I've run in to are:

1) Cant use the touch screen with gloves (This sucks because I ride and not wearing gloves wont be an option come winter.

2) A little glitchy at first, but recent upgrades seem to have resolved these issues.

3) Headset does amplify some sounds making it uncomfortable for people on the other end (power equipment, gunshots, ect.)

Other than that, it does work as advertised and I havent regretted my purchase for one minute.

Apple will release new software, and may open up the platform to other vendors. However, they are encouraging the idea of iPhone-specific apps being written for the web platform, rather than having apps local to the phone.

It remains to be seen which direction they ultimately go with it. I think the big issue for Jobs right now is that Apple is very much about the total user experience, and most phone apps (and their interfaces) just straight-up suck. That makes Jobs leery to relinquish control over the platform. I can definitely see Apple releasing to ADC members an iPhone-specific dev kit with frameworks and guidelines, but I doubt they will open it up to the latest crappy Java port of Pacman.

I suppose with the unlimited internet of the plans AT&T is offering, they could simply force them to do it on a web-only basis.

As a side question: if one has less bars of service, does the speed of the network for internet drop? Or does the latency simply take a hit?
