We used AC-47's in Veitnam for sure, I don't know if the AC-130 was used or not.  At any rate I bet the guys on the ground are having a real good time with that circling them!

Oh yeah.  The AC-47 came out just before I was in the AF (66-78).  I had the pleasure of watching a few of them and the AC-119 work over an area.  Very impressive, especially when you realize that only one in ten (IIRC) of that stream is a tracer.  There's an invisible 9 in between.

I saw a couple AC-130 on the ground at TonSohnNhut (Saigon) when they just had miniguns and a single 40mm gun.  When they first got a 105, it was pointed out the back.

They've come a long way since!  Fighters & bombers come & go over a battlefield, but these guys hang in the sky for 10 - 12 hours, shooting up anything that dares stick its head up.  Very serious machinery.

Good old CNN manages to screw up again:
"And we did that with the AC-130 gunship armed with three guns, a 40 mm mortar, 105 mm howitzer and another 40 mm gun"

What the heck is a 40 mm mortar?? They left out the best weapon: GATLING!

Anyone knows where the AC130 were based?

New? I remember that plane from the old John Wayne movie, "The Green Berets". They called it Puff the Magic Dragon. It's probably upgraded with all kinds of GPS fire controls and high tech electronics now.

3 C130's flew over our town here couple days ago. They were about 100' about the houses. They always did come over once in a while but since 9-11 they fly over more often and before there would be 2 of them but now there are 3 sometimes. the last time they came over they banked on they're sides just as they were over my house. Maybe they were practicing by targeting my house? naahhhh
