There is an extremely good book on Spectre operations in Vietnam by Henry Zeybel, called "Gunship - Spectre of Death". Read it and tremble.

I was stationed in Indian Springs, NW of Nellis in the mid '80's. The NV Air Guard ( I think ) would work out in the desert with these things, within easy sight, at night. Just absolutely ungodly. One could see the lights of the aircraft orbiting, then red rain, then a few moments later, a sound like God giving you a raspberry. Has to be seen to be appreciated. Photos or film of this simply don't compare. Kind of a "WHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIRRRRRPP" sound.

I remember news reports that came out of the Gulf War regarding the A-10. The Vulcan
Cannon on that thing struck the fear of god into those people. They literaly jumped out of whatever armored vehicle they were in and ran to the hills. Hey, where are the A-10's? If it is quiet enough to run AC-130's at night it should be safe enough to run the A-10's during the day.
Not to mention that night-flying A-10's should be escorting AC-130's on flack suppression duty. |

Muh father commanded a Forward Air Control Unit when the gulf war started. They would go out in their decked out Hummers and tell the 10's where and what to kill. Luckily his unit didn't have to go to Saudi.... |

What? No "A" models? There is an A model parked about five miles from my house. Drop by sometime. [:)] Spent seven years with the H models. Was deployed with the guys from Duke Field on a couple of occasions. Operation JUST CAUSE comes to mind. Eddie |

Thanks, Eddie. We had two squadrons of Spectre gunships, one each of A and H models. The H models were a lot easier to work on than the A's. The pictures brought back some great memories.
