www.audiogalaxy.com has worked the best for me so far.

I am not crazy about the web-based interface however...

Morpheus aka Kaaza is the best I've found.  It's almost identical to Napster.  Everything works great and all you have to do is download it for free.

Morpheus from www.musiccity.com is awesome, and it supports formats other than WAV, such as VIDEO (:

Lot of file sharing of some cool flicks (:

Definetly Morpheus. I had switched to that even before napster got neutered.

Try any of the Gnutella clients. I have found everything I needed, and the Gnutella network also allows trade of pretty much any type of file.

I like Internet Relay Chat. Try #mp3oldies and #mp3jazzhouse on Dalnet. There are a lot of other channels too that I'm not familiar with.

800 mp3's and the time it took to acquire them didn't make them "important" enough to back up?

Those recomending KaZaa are not telling you that with it all mp3's are sub 128Kbps.

If you seek a higher bit rate and thus better quality KaZaa is to be avoided.

I also found it to be difficult to tailor it's settings, and it installs spyware even if you elect to leave it off at install.

Try WinMX.

Morpheus gets my vote.. I was a loyal Napster fan until the end, then I went to Bearshare but it got too slow.. Morpheus is the way to go...I can download alot of songs within a matter of days or hours...

There are different purposes.
Generally it is to track your internet surfing habits or purchasing choices.

... I've been lucky, never recieved anything but clean files, filters haven't even found any spyware. The majority of my music came from Napster.
The nice thing about Bearshare is the if your host "pulls the plug" you can resume downloads without affecting the file.

... no worries

Morpheus rules!  I tried Audiogalaxy and Aimster and had no luck at all with either of them.  Then the gang here at AR15.com came through for me as usual and told me about Morpheus.  It's way better then Napster ever was.  Anything you want is there...audio, video, text....anything.  And if your host knocks your download off, it will resume the identical file from another host.  I highly recommend it.
