I was just wondering what the correct pronunciation of this is.
Is it pronounced:
car-bean or car-byne?????

The American Heritage Dictionary lists both as being correct. Car'byne is listed first, which means that it is prefered.

I wouldn't pronounce "carbine" the same that someone from the northeast would. Since you're from CA, you can understand that all northeasterners have an unintelligible accent that drives the rest of us (mainly southerners) crazy.
The correct pronunciation would depend upon your region, as Websters says that both are correct. In the south, southwest, and midwest, pronounce the word "CAR-BEAN." Up north, pronounce the word "CAR-BYNE." It would be great if someone would publish a pronunciation manual for the U.S., with all of the accents and local jargon. It would be most handy for vacations, and would help you blend in with the locals.

I call bullshit- listen to fat old Kennedy and tell me that he speaks proper English. It's not the NE, it's Conneticut. The most proper form of North American English is spoken in Conneticut- those folks have almost no accent, and pronounce everything so that you can understand them. How boring!

Someone is working on it. It is the Dictionary of American Regional English[url]http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/dare/dare.html[/url].It's a massive undertaking which they've been working for several decades and aren't even up to the letter "S" yet.

Yes, pr. car-"Bean" it comes from the word for short barreled rifle = Cara-bean. French I think.
In German, it's also Karabiner. "Cara-beaner".

Read my post above for Garand, I'm dead sure on this, got it from Thatcher's "Book of the Garand".
Carbine = Car-been, because of the original pronunciation of the root, French word.
Casull= Ca-sool, because that's how the man pronounces his name (sim. to Garand).
