I'm looking for a cheap rifle with a good rate of fire but with better accuracy than an AK. I figured one of these two might work. Which one would you recommend and why? Or would you recommend a different rifle? Are 308 enfield mags hard to come by?

SKS (my vote)--IBTP

only problems: ammo (cost and availability)
h/w, its semi, lots of parts, cheap, durable, and well worth it

the Enfields are pretty ok; good bolt action rifles, but i think the sights are a little rough but it does have one adv over the SKS: the .,308 is a full cartrige (vs the intermediate) and will get your more accuracy and range

i dont know about mags though

My Yugo SKS was my first center-fire rifle and I absolutely love it. It's big and heavy, but tough and shoots well. I'd trust it completely in the event of a zombie invasion.

I know the enfield had a reputation for "rate of fire", but why pick it over any semi-auto anything for that reason? It got it's rep for rapid fire, or so I have read, for a group of guys firing, not just one.

AR, AK, SKS, or one of many others for rate of fire, but not a lone Enfield.

ETA: I have an Enfiled, and like it, but I'd use my WASR10 first if it came down "to it".

Consider a Mauser in .308. Of the two you mentioned, go with the SKS.

Nebraska's a pretty flat state that may require a lot of long shots would an enfield be more appropriote for that.

If by ".308 Enfield" you are referring to the Indian 2A Ishapore Enfields, you cannot shoot .308 Winchester in those. They are built for 7.62x51 NATO pressures only.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to hunt with it (which I doubt), that's one thing, ammo usage is not intensive. But if you want it for plinking, look at the availability and price of 7.62x51 ammo and compare it to the availability and price of 7.62x39 and the answer should be obvious.

Honestly, you probably aren't going to need any more than one Enfield mag, if it functions reliably. You'll either use stripper clips or single load. I just can't see you having 5 mags pre-loaded with 10 rounds of 7.62x51.

I had to order a replacement because the mag spring that came with mine broke. I think I got it from Numrich see here). They list it for $36.

get the SKS if 7.62x39 is still plentiful.

the 2A's are nice rifles if you're an Enfield fan, other than that, to me, they're just a novelity

the M1A and Garand always trump, but just to answer the OP's Q... I picked the SKS.

SKS, but not a Yugo.

They are well built, but long and front heavy with the gernade launcher and sites on the front.

Get a Russian (well made) or even a Norinco in good shape and call it good.

Chinese SKS.

Enfields are nice I have 2. But for rate of fire and decent accuracy I go to my SKS between the 2.

Matched with those 10-rd stripper clips, its a battlerifle in a C&R form.

Yugos are pretty much the Cadillacs of SKS rifles - Considerably better workmanship than the average Chicom or Ruskie, at a bargain-basement price.

Good rate of fire would be the SKS.
Accuracy would be the Enfield.

Going cheap will get you neither. Sorry the 3 things you posted as wanting can not be found.

I vote get the SKS, it's the best "CHEAP" deal out there.

My refinished Ishaphore "carbine".

My opinion is get both.

They arent that expensive. Be ready to put alot of work into the Enfield if you want to make it look nice.

I own a SKS and Enfield .303

SKS all the way...Though .303 is more suitable for longer distances.
