The first time I fired the “Black Rifle” was in Army basic training.  After a week of dry firing, we got our ammo.  I will never forget the smell of the oil and propellant and the way the rifle felt.  It was the most comfortable rifle I had ever fired up to that point.

It was in '79 and I was 14 years old.  My cousin was really into guns and he had bought some type of AR15.  For some reason I recall him calling it an AR180, though I really don't remember.  I wasn't into guns at the time and last time I saw/spoke to him was in '88.  I'm not on good terms with that side of the family so I don't think I'll ever see him again anyway.

I bought my first "black gun" in Dec. '99, right before the cut off date for getting one behind the lines in Kali.

Like they say, "Once you go black, you never go back!".

Basic training in 73, I can still recall the commands " Ready on the left!, ready on the right!, ready on the firing line!, commence to fire!".

My Dad took me to a gunstore to get some pistol ammo.
After he helped my Dad, he looked down at me and said:
"Young man, is there anything you'd like to see?"
I said
"Is that an M16?"

"No, it's an AR15, but it's just like an M16"
He opened it up, I remember him showing us the bolt, buffer and spring.
I was completely amazed when he leaned over the glass counter and handed it to me.
Even as a small kid, I was suprised how thin and light it was.
I will never forget it.

When I finally got to shoot an M16A1 in the Army, it seemed like a toy compared to my Dad's .303 SMLE Lee Enfield.

Basic training, Fort Knox KY, 1984.I was amazed at how a rifle with so much slop, that you could actually see through it(upper and lower receivers)would operate flawlessly.

One of my non-gun friends had to have one, so he bought a Sporter Pre-ban on consignment about 10 years ago. I was used to solid wood and steel hunting rifles and shotguns and just thought he was wasting his money $800 on a piece of aluminum and plastic. We shot it and I still wasn't impressed, but I did buy myself a Bushy five years later and like it a lot.

Note: I am trying to get my friend to sell his pre-ban since he only takes it out once every couple years.

Never shot one. No one I know has one. I ordered one earlier this summer, but couldn't afford to go through with it. Life sucks for me.

Nov 1972 Basic Training...

My first time was in the middle 80's.  I built my own on a PWA lower and was hooked. At the time I only had 3 firearms, now I have over 30!

My dad's A1 when I was about 14. To be honest it didn't astonish me as much as they do now. Back then I was in love with 10/22s. Luckily I got smarter with age.

March, 1981, Colt AR-15 SP-1, took it out of the box, took that goofy piece of rolled paper out of the barrel, put 5 rounds of .223 into the 20 round magazine, wondered why it would not hold any more? All of this taking place in the local gravel pit where we used to be able to shoot!

1988, USAF Basic. It had a crappy, filthy .22LR conversion in it, and jammed like mad.. Still shot damn accurately. No forward assist, triangular handguards, and I remember it reading "AR-15".Not M-16..

It all started after reading this board.

February of this year, bought my lower receiver. Throughout March and April bought the remaining parts (as I could afford them). May 12th had a complete rifle.  May 20th, in the year of our Lord 2001 went to the range and unloaded 100 rounds of Black Hills 55gr. FMJ's.

I truly love my AR-15.  Now I got to get me a reliable sidearm.  Had a Walther P38, and want another.

They came with 5round mags, I guess for hunting.
The Colt barrel came with a greasey oily broen cardboard tube inside the barrel. It looked kinda like the candy "Pixy-Stick" or a long brown paper drinking straw.

Actually tried and cannot remember my first time shooting the black rifle. Don't remember my first pizza either.

But by 13 I was outshooting guardsmen(no big trick), with my dads HK91 at the 300 yard range in Key West.

I have been lusting after AR-15's since I saw the first one at an Oshman's Sporting Goods at San Jacinto Mall in Baytown, TX.  I was probably 8 or 9 years old.  I even had one of those Crossman AR-look alike BB guns.  Eventually, my love for the AR15 died back down until I went and visited my friend in Austin, and he was showing me his gun collection, which included a pre-ban AR-15 carbine.  And instantly my lust for black rifles was rekindled.  I then started reading gun magazines to purchase a pistol for Y2K, and noticed a lot of AR-15 articles.  I looked into buying one, but didn't have the cash for a pre-ban and decided it was going to be pre-ban or nothing.  Time passed and I still wanted one, but when I'd have the money something bad would happen and I'd have to spend it on an emergency.

Finally in August of this year, the same friend who showed me his gun collection back in 1999 told me that he was buying a Registered DIAS for his bushmaster and was going to sell his Colt SP1 since he wasn't going to be shooting it anymore.  He came back the next week with his new converted Bushmaster and the Colt SP1.

So, my first time actually ever firing a black rifle was in August of this year in full-auto with a 9mm upper and switched to the .223 upper when we ran out of 9mm ammo.  It was a blast, and I made sure to bring along my little brother, who is also now lusting after a black rifle of his own.  When he graduates from high school in three years I plan on giving him either a pre-ban or a newly unbanned ar-15.

Must've been 15 or so.  Dad was at that time a Sergeant with PDX working in the Training Divison.  We were at the annual "Range Day/BBQ" and one of the SERT guys showed up with his MP5 and CAR.  That MP5 was cool, but Damn!  I wanted that CAR!  Eleven years later, I finally have my very own Post Ban M4gery.  Just got it together last night, damn range is closed Mon-Tue.  In 15 hours, I'll be busting caps.

17 years old, drove out to the sheriffs range with a VW Beetle full of weaponry, late 1980. My friend's parents were FFL holders and his mom was a cop, and we took their inventory out on several occasions.

Imagine pulling over a 17 year old nowadays with 6 or 7 rifles, 10 to 15 handguns and several thousand rounds of ammo. Damn, I'd make CNN now!

They had a NIB Colt AR. I remember shooting it and thinking, "WTF is that springy noise in my ear?" Loved that gun though, that and a Gold Cup 1911. And a 700 BDL in .300 Win Mag. Sweet gun.

1987....issued it at the stupid round armory at MCRD San Diego.
Learned how to assemble, take apart, clean, and name all parts and what they did in that big building just as you got to the hut area.
Fired it for the first time at the MCB at the Edison Range zero course, then off to one of the middle courses for real shooting.
