If you read the article closely, it sounds like they are doing it to draw attention to themselves so that people will visit the area. Upon visiting the area they spend money and help thier "economy".
So not only do they draw the anger of conservatives and the ridicule of those not in La-La land, they benefit by drawing people in who want to visit that zoo.[%|] |

Everyone else makes their money panhandling |
