FoxNews reported that one of the aircraft that attacked the Taliban yesterday was a strike variant of the F-14 nicknamed the "Bombcat".  I never heard of this before.  Could they be referring to the new F-14D "Super Tomcat"?  I just read that there is a squadron equipped with F-14Ds on the USS Carl Vinson (VF-213).

Yup...

They ran testing for F-14A's to fly the air-to-ground role with their underpowered Pratt and Whitney engines.

Then when the B's came along (originally called the F-14A+) with the upgraded GE engines, they upgraded a few of those to the air-to-ground role, there was much rejoicing.

With the new D model, along with other upgrades, they added the air-to-ground capability.  So all F-14D's are capable of being a Bombcat, even if they aren't always equipped that way.

There's also a Flircat...an F14 with Forward Looking InfraRed.

I noticed an interesing thing about the B-52 the other day.  It looked to have what appears to be an air-to-air missle on it.  Can anyone confirm this?

Tool,

Was it generic file footage?  The B-52 can carry Harpoon anti-ship missiles, which look kind of like oversize air-to-air weapons.

the "bombcats" were undergoing some training at nas fallon nv. the last time i was there with my f-18 squadron. there bombing capabilities are about as good as the talibans anti aircraft weapons. It's radar is not made to look at ground targets, only air targets. My pilots would not stop talking s**t about them because they could barely get a hit in the 500' bullseye. But the hornets were putting the bombs thru the windshields of the target trucks and planes.

Tomcat's APG-71 is a deriviative of the Strike Eagles APG-70. Its ground attack performance is also comparable, and superior to the single seat Hornet, especally at night.
