I keep hearing the same stupid rumor ever since I joined the army, people always tell me a .50cal bullet will hurt you if it passes within a foot of you.

This is one of the dumbest things i've have ever been told about a gun. I just keep my mouth shut most of the time when I hear this crap because its usuialy the higher up's saying it.

Is there anyone else who has been told this crap?

The best one I have ever seen was "a .50cal rifle can shoot down a satelite"

What stupid things have you been told?

5.56 tumbles in flight

racking a shotgun scares people to death

high-powered handguns

full automatic sniper baby killer rifle

if you own guns your a baby killer

guns "JUST" go off

nobody needs a gun like that

you cant hunt with that rifle

that gun is illegal

only cops and military need guns

....alright I missed a few but this is a weekly thread here....

And the all time winner, "They (NVA) can shoot our ammo in their guns, but we can't shoot their ammo in ours."

First, a 5.56, then called the .223 Remington, won't fit and fire in an AK47 or SKS chambered in 7.62x39.

Second, the 7.62 NATO, then called the .308 Winchester, will not fit and fire in an AK47 or SKS chambered in 7.62x39.  Though the caliber is the same (bore diameter/bullet diameter), the cartridge is too long.

Pure BS.

The M1 carbine is underpowered and the heavy coats the north Koreans wore saved them.

actually the caliber isn't even the same.  7.62X51 = .308  and 7.62X39 = .311

My uncle swore that he shot a German across a soccer field three times with a M1 carbine, knocking dust off the guys coat each time and the kraut never went down.

I can see someone not going down immediately.  But the idea that heavy cloths would help at all is definately  .30 carbine will zap a hole through a whole lot of coats.  It never suffered from penetration problems.

Unless it's a MAC-11 in which case a magnet placed in a certain position on the outside of the receiver will turn it into a FA.

I hear the .50 cal passing by and ripping skin one all the time.  That the the 5.56 tumbling and lack of understanding of 7.62x39 and .308.

I'm still learning much myself but enjoy poking holes in peoples stories.

And the ChiComs used to, and maybe still do for all I know, make a 61mm light mortar that can use our 60mm mortar ammo (though I'm told it's not especially accurate), but 61mm mortar rounds won't fit down the tube of a 60mm mortar.

I think that may be half the origin of this rumor.  The other half could be that people have fired 7.62x51mm ammo in .30-06 Garands, sometimes without blowing themselves up in the process, but the ejected brass looks awfully strange.

It probably had more to do with which one you want to hump all day.  A M16 or 30cal carbine is a feather compared to the Garand or M14.
