Found a Mossberg 500 shotgun yesterday with a strap over the forend and a serrated flash-hider at the muzzle. What is it for?

It also had a folding pistol grip stock. It was $350. Good deal? Good shotgun?

What is with the serrated muzzle?

Door breaching.

Probably the breacher. It is not a flash hider, it is a door breaching stand-off device.

Must be a new fangled barrel shroud.

Also depends on the condition of the gun and the brand of stock if it is worth $350. I know those breaching fh's are expensive.

Anyone have a link to one on the web or more info with pictures?

What do you mean by "breaching?" Jab it in someones face at close quarters?

Place against door, pull trigger, enter door.

Destroying the locking mechanism/knob on a door to gain entry. AKA "breaching"

Breaching is to blow the dog shit out of door hinges and locks to rapidly gain entry into a room.

I see them at the gun shows all the time for $375

Well, I bought a used pistol grip 500 for $100 a little over a year ago.

ÜberTactical and can be used to core apples when there's no locks to be breached or faces to be jabbed in...

So does that set the price for ALL 500's at $100?

No, if you had read my previous postings you would see that I said the price depends on the stock and condition.

ETA: It is no different than your generalization.

That is it. Do you only use special ammo for it?

I kinda want one, even though I'm not breaching with it and they are relatively useless as a firearm.

Here's one on Gunbroker for $320.

Of course Impact Guns has them on sale right now, $297.  Kinda tempting.

I also kinda want a Mossberg JIC "Sandstorm".  Why, I don't know.  Sometimes a gun just looks cool to you, even though you know its friggin stupid to get one when you already have a nice Benelli M1 and a nice 870.  Dealer on them is less than $300.

EDIT:  As far as special ammo, it'll shoot anything including slugs.  For breaching, there are special breaching rounds available with a bunch of compressed powdered aluminum sitting on top of the wad.  Unofficially, please don't-try-this-at-home and all that, I've found that #6 lead shot actually works pretty well to breach with.  On smaller hinges it blows them directly opposite of the line made by the shotgun barrel.  On larger hinges, I don't mess with shooting the hinges at all, but simply splinter the wood around them with two or three shots each, leaving the hinges hanging in the frame when the door gets kicked in a second later.  I'm not military or police and doing this in a "real world" situation, its just been a "for fun" trial and error experimentation.  One of those "one day it might be handy to know this stuff" type things.

Yep. The points on the end of the muzzle-device help it stick into the door.
The idea is that you stab the door with it, blow the locking mechanism (on heavier doors, blow out each hinge), and enter.

There are "breaching shells" made specifically for this purpose, too. I doubt they're commercially available to civilians. If I recall correctly, they fire little pellets that are designed to destroy the door but (hopefully) nothing beyond it. Kind of similar to frangible ammo, I guess you could say.

Now that I look at it and think about it....
the "breaching" device looks like someone took a hole saw, rethreaded it, and attached it to the muzzle...
