What does everyone place on top of your work area while you're cleaning?

I've always used an old towel and washed it every so many cleanings, but recently I'm starting to think it might be dangerous (even short term) because it has the cleaning fluids in it.  Vapors, spontaneous combustion, etc.

Anyone use anything innovative?

Newspapers, soak up the solvents and are cheap to use.  Pitch in the garbage can when done, makes the garbage smell o-so good. Good shootin! ALLONS11

I only use Tetra products, so I don't have to worry about the hazmat fumes from some of the old cleaners.
ALLONS11, when were you with the 11th? I'm an old border legions Hawg Company vet.

Old rags of course!!  I take great care of my guns, but I also know that they are tools and meant to be used.  So if a little scratch gets on them I really don't frett all that much.
