I've been given the option of the Glock 17 or Glock 22. Personally, I don't care which one I use. What are the pros and cons of each? I'm sure it just boils down to personal preference.. Anyway, thanks!

I like the 17 but for a leo I`d go for the bigger hole.

Glock 22
Full sized frame. Big hole like Rich314 mentioned(.40 cal) Always ready, no safety to futz with. Lightweight, reliable and accurate. Just feed it factory ammo and you wouldn't have to worry about the much dreaded Kb effect.

I'd also opt for the Glock 22 as long as your agency is paying for the gun, ample number of LE full-cap magazines, and lot's of practice ammo.

I love my Glock 17, and you can't go wrong with that either. For non-LE people, the Glock 17 is the better choice due to better cost/availability of full-cap mags, as well as less expensive practice ammo.

Actually,

I'll be a Reserver Deputy in Oklahoma County. That means that I will have to buy all of my equipment... Hummm! I'm kind of leaning towards the 22....

Ian,

Will your department buy you full-cap G22 mags? If not, I just want to warn you that pre-ban Glock 22 mags are hard to find and expensive. Also, ammo is more expensive to buy for practice. That's not to say the Glock 22 is now a bad choice, it isn't. The Glock 22 is an excellent weapon. My point is that the more of this that you have to buy, the better off you'll be with a Glock 17. Pre-ban mags are more plentiful and less expensive, 9mm practice ammo is cheaper, and as far as the old "9mm vs. .40 S&W" argument, either is an excellent round. High performance LE rounds are equally effective in either caliber. I say this because I own and shoot Glocks in both calibers.

I would go with the G22, for all of the above reasons. It is pretty much the standard in many agencies, at least in my area .

I don't think they'd be willing to buy the high-cap mags.. But I could get 2 LE only high-cap mags with it when I buy it..

You should be able to get post-ban hi-caps when ever you want just get your dept letter head and have then sign it. I also have to buy all my stuff but I don't work for a dept I just get my judge to sign. I carry the 22 and have done so for 11 years. I have never had a problem. I would not hesitate to buy a new one but why would I?

Yeah it would come with the post-ban high-cap mags..The only thing I'd be worried about is a kB! I don't want that to happen.. They say it hasn't been reported with a 17.. But ohhh well. 22 it is..

Kb's mainly occur on G22. I have not seen any occurences with the G17. I would say 95% of those Kb's are due to reloads. Glock specifically says that you should not use reloads on any of their pistols.

I like the G19 for concealed carry. Just seems perfect and is a joy to shoot.

If I had to carry a Glock on duty, I'd seriously consider making it the G35 Tactical/Practical. Man that thing is a pointer. It's also in .40 for that extra wump.

Ditto on the 35. I own a 34 and think it`s the best Glock out there. I`ve heard Glock is making a P/T (5.34" barrell) size in 45 this year.

I use a 17 as a duty gun and here is why

17 rd. mags fit in a subcompact backup pistol

9mm ammo might not be as big as a .40 but 17 rounds (ya better make a hit if needed)

the mp5 ammo can also be used
if your agency uses them......

my agency also will purchase leo mags at 21.00 ea.

As a fellow law officer I say carry the Glock 22. I carried one before we were issued Sig P220's. A buddy of mine carried a 9mm and bragged about the extra rounds. We went to a junkyard to prove a point. We stood 25 yards from a junk car and he shot first. We each aimed at the windshield. All 17 rounds of his 9mm hit the windshield and deflected up. Not a single one penetrated the windshield. All 15 of my .40 caliber rounds went in. Don't look at it as 2 less rounds look at it as 15 rounds that WILL penetrate.

I forgot to mention that the junkyard's owner gave us permission to conduct the above experiment.

I would also go with the G22. It is a much more flexible platform. You can procure aftermarket .357 Sig and 9mm barrels for some off-duty practice and entertainment. Other uppers are available such as a G24 longslide, a G35 P/T, and even a .22 from a couple of different companies. While the 9mm will accept a .22 upper and maybe a longslide, that is about it! If you choose to compete to keep your skills up, the .40 will make major, whereas the 9mm won't.

The G22 just offers a bigger punch and more flexibility. Moreover, if you ever choose to pick up the best Glocks in the finest caliber, the same projectiles you reload in the G22 can be used in the G20 and G29!

I have a model 19 can't say enough good about the Glocks.
Excellent pistols with not so excellent sights(trust me).
9mm or 40S&W? Tough choice better get one of each.

Go with the 22 and tritrium sites. You will be able to buy all the genuine Glock LE mags you want on letterhead for about $16. We have over 1500 22's in use in my county with out one kB. Very reliable weapon! The standard and LE mags also fit the compact 27.

There's nothing wrong with either the Glock 17 or 22. Gangster thugs, despite their infinite stupidity, have happened upon one of the finest handguns made (G17).

Glock 22 is the ONLY choice when your life is on the line. The Federal 155 grain hydrashock has a one shot stop percentage of 97-98%. Even if you have to buy your own equipment, don't chince out and buy the inferion 9mm.

If you MUST go Glock, Go for the .40. The 9mm round is a bit whimpy. Also, BER92FM is wrong about dropping in a 9mm barrel. Can't do it. .357 Sig maybe, but that isn't recommended. You should train and play with that which you carry.

As much as I am a fan of the Glock 22/23/27, I would respectfully disagree that the Glock 17 is an inferior weapon. The best HP loads for 9mm weapons are rated just as high as the better .40 S&W loads. The Winchester Ranger 127 +P+ and the Speer Gold Dot 124 +P are every bit as good police loads as the .40 S&W loads available right now when fired from a full-sized pistol.

Anyway, I am not saying Ian is choosing the wrong pistol, quite the contrary, I think the Glock 22 is an awesome weapon. I'm just saying that having a Glock 17 is not a downgrade.

I am a state constable in Pa. we do sheriff type work for the magistrate courts!I.E. arrest warrants and writs and papers! and keepin' da' peace at election polling places! We all have to buy our own equipment too! but we can carry anything we want as long as we can qualify with it once a year! I carry a Glock 21 .45 with 230 Gr.remington Golden sabres.They have at the worst figures i've seen a 92% 1 stop shot average! I figure if mister goblin makes me have to shoot him, i might as well make sure there's less chance of him being around to sue me afterwards!
