Has anyone ever used .223 bullets less than 55 grain??

If so, why???

I know some rifles have a 1 in 11" that work well with lighter bullets. How common are these slower twists???

I use 53g alot through my 700VS with 1-12 twist.

as fer as common the only 223 remington I know of that has a 1-9 is the PSS.

The fast twist's are uncommon in AR's. That said, there are a lot of good varmint style bullets in lighter calibers. That is my guess as to the wide use of lighter bullets. I like the extra velocity you get with lighter bullets.

I shoot a lot of 52 grain FBHPM and 53 grain BTHPM in a rifle of mine with a 1-12" twist. Varminteers would shoot a 40 grainer like the Hornady V-Max, because of the velocities that can be reached.

I have had excellent results with Federal 50 grn HPs. Very accurate in my 1 in 9 twist ARs.

My mini-14 has a 1-14in twist. the .45grain "winchester whitebox" stuff works great!

i shoot smk 53 grainers in my cle service rifle(1/7.7 twist) for reduced 100 yard matches... very accurate

I have never used anything lighter than 55 grs myself.

However, I know that 3 gun /IPSC types like the 40-something gr bullets, probably for their nill recoil. I understand that some M-4 users (and other shorty users) like light bullets to achieve high mvs in short barrels. And the 52 gr bullet is generaly viewed as the most accurate at 100 yards. Some Highpower shooters use the 52s for reduced range work, or for the 200 yard stage.

Sierra 52gr HPBT are the most accurate 100 yard bullet around. And 40gr. bullet are very,very fast with [i]no[/i] recoil for immediate follow up shots. Very important when the squirrels have bazookas.

I use 40 gr Federal Blitz in my Mini with 1/7 twist for pest control. The bullets don't disintegrate as some have speculated. I can report with confidence that the porcupines and feral cats pretty much do disintegrate, though.
The rifle is also the most accurate with the 50gr AE HPs.

Shot Fed AE 50 gr HP's in 1x9" and they were very accurate. They make up for the loss of velocity and expansion in SBR's (ie:in 11.5" compared to using M193).

Yep, velocity is the key. A 3500 fps 40gr VMAX creates a nice crimson mist when it hits a varmint. Plus the lighter bullets are less likely to travel any major distance after they hit something.
