Thomas Jefferson, November 13, 1787:

"We have had 13 states independent 11 years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms, the remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure."

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."              Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776.

Rip, here's a little more of the beginning...
kind of timely, isn't he ?

"Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, What should be the reward of such sacrifices?'
Bid us and our posterity bow the knee, supplicate the friendship, and plough, and sow, and reap, to glut the avarice of the men who have let loose on us the dogs of war to riot in our blood and hunt us from the face of the earth?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility  of servitude more than the animating contest of freedom,   go from us in peace.
We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you.
    May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!"

Ben Franklin 1759
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Thomas Jefferson
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

Thomas Jefferson
"The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it."

Patrick Henry
"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined. The great object is that every man be armed and everyone who is able may have a gun."

Patrick Henry
"Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense?"

George Washington
"Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the people's liberty teeth."

"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." - James Madison

"If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, and give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses;

And the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they do now, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains around the necks of our fellow sufferers;

And this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for a second, that second for a third, and so on 'til the bulk of the society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering...

And the forehorse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression." - Thomas Jefferson

“The peaceable part of mankind will be continually overrun by the vile and abandoned while they neglect the means of self defense. . . [Weakness] allures the ruffian [but] arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe and preserve order in the world. . . Horrid mischief would ensure were [the good] deprived of the use of them. . . [and] the weak will become a prey to the strong.”

Thomas Paine
