How 'bout the Kimber Ultra CDP? Fairly light weight, and no rough edges at all. I've never shot one, but they sure look nice.

I like 1911's, but for carry it's hard to beat either a Glock 30 or 36.
USP's are nice too, take your pick. The Glock 36 is smaller. |

How is the recoil on the Glock 36? Is the slide easy to rack and/or release? I handled one in a gun store a while ago, and I could barely release the slide with one hand. Is that normal, and if so, does this improve? BTW, it wasn't just me...the guy at the store could barely release it too.

When a fresh mag is inserted, it is best just to pull the slide back and release. The reason is the slide is not fully to the rear when held by the catch. The technique is described right in the manual that comes with the pistol. Not quite the same as handling a 1911. With no mag in place and the catch holding the slide back, it's easier if you pull the slide back a little and then operate the release with your thumb. |

My 19 is easy to release. I guess the 36 has stiffer springs though. Maybe I'm just a girlie-man.

Way too many choices out there. You need to handle them and find one that feels right. Shoot them if you can. I would stick with a reputable manufacturer. On the top of my list would be Wilson Combat, Kimber, Les Baer and Springfield Armory. I personally carry a minimally modified Colt Gold Cup National Match, but only because I can't afford the big bucks right now to have a second .45 specifically for carry. I have carried a Colt Officer's Model (3.25" bbl) and it was a great carry weapon, except for the weight (all stainless model). Good luck.

Glock 30 is SMALL? Put it next to a Kimber Ultra CDP and see the HUGE difference in thicjness... particularly in the grip.
Maybe my kimber only has seven rounds, but it is far more comfortable to carry and has a heck of a better trigger. Don't get me wrong, I love my Glocks, but a Kimber they ain't. The best carry gun is the one you are comfortable carring and will thus carry all the time. I couldn't imagine carrying that thick assed G30! |

i'll second the glock 30/36. If size is that big an issue the 36 is much smaller. i lost faith in my 30 awhile back listening to all the KB crowd. Ignore them them its a great pistol and works very well for me for ccw. g30 = 10+1 double stack 36 = 8+1 single stack

In my case, I'm 6'1", 240 lbs, so skinny I ain't! I can't hide my P14 though.... A lot of it has to do with holster choice and clothing. In hot weather, I carry a SP101 in a pocket holster. I can completely hide it even wearing shorts and a t-shirt. The rest of the time I have no problems hiding my G30 and spare mags. If it's really cold out or I'm driving and wearing a jacket, I carry my P14 in a shoulder rig. Max Firepower! |

My carry is Combat Commander... nice and flat and can be hidden anywhere. My second choice would be my Glock 30. However, for ankle carry, I use my Walther PPK.

It really depends on what you want to spend and what action type your comfortable with.If you want DA,then the Glock is the lightest,smallest,accurate and reliable.Reasonable $500 price to.
If its a SA 1911 type you want the choices are infinite.Money buying you more hand/custom work.For about $600-700 you can get a Colt defender or Kimber Ultra Carry.These are basically production guns with 3" barrel and alluminum frame,depends on which brand you like.Both are good and there are many loyal fans of either make. For about $1000 you can get a Kimber CDP ultra carry that has more attention to detail and hand fitting invoved in its construction aswell as a great carry "melt"that pretty much renders it snag free.For this price you can also get the polymer Wilson,I beleive it holds 10 rounds and has a 4" barrel.I think everyone would agree that Wilson is topflight in whatever they build. You could spend alot more on the SA types,but why?Hope this helps.Byron |

agreed, I can easily conceal mine with a sidearmor holster, and it can use glock 21 magazines, although they stick out of the grip

glock 30..good capacity and great accuracy. was playing around with one at the range a month ago and taking 100 yard shots on a steel shilohette and hittin 3 of 5 consistently..

I would like the glock 36 cept it feels like a 2x4 in my hand. I have fairly small hands (7 1/2 glove). Anybody with small hands using this piece? Should I give it another chance?
Used to shoot an officer's model, but was too chicken to carry it locked and cocked. |

Full sized Government model 1911 with 5" barrel. They conceal nicely.
In the words of Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch "When it comes to busting caps to save your life, you will be thinking 'Why don't they make a bigger gun!'". Compact is *nice*, but a full sized gun is much more stable in your hands...especially when the adrenaline is pumping hard. ON EDIT: If you have small hands (mine are), get thin grips on your 1911. That combined with the single stack magazine make a GREAT pistol for smaller handed shooters. |

How bout a Sig P245?
6 in the mag and one in the chamber gives you 7. Feels a helluva lot better in your hand that a Glock. I have the P220 full size and love everything about it. |

God Bless Texas Actually, since the .45 ACP is a low-pressure round (compared to .40 S&W and 9mm) the shorter barrel has very little effect on velocity. Now, a shorter barrel on a .40 or 9 sillymeter results in a much larger decrease in velocity. |
