WASHINGTON - Americans, firmly behind the administration's war on
terrorism, are ready to give up some civil liberties if it helps
catch those responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and
Washington, according to a poll released on Saturday.

The poll of 1,215 Americans, published in The Washington Post, showed
that nine out of 10 people believed President Bush was doing a good
job -- a figure in line with other surveys conducted since the deadly
attacks.

A similar number favored a military response to the attacks and said
the United States needed to capture or kill Saudi-born militant Osama
bin Laden, who the administration holds responsible for the plot, and
dismantle his al Qaeda network.

Some 6,500 people are feared dead in the attacks, when hijackers
rammed three planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in
New York and the Pentagon near Washington.

A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania, probably after passengers
overpowered the hijackers.

The survey showed that between 69 percent and 95 percent of
respondents favored granting police additional powers to tap
telephones or intercept voice mail or e-mail, as well as to hold
foreign terrorist suspects indefinitely.

``One sacrifice Americans said they are willing to make is in their
civil liberties,'' the newspaper said.

The Washington Post also said many people favored action that went
well beyond the administration's stated goals.

Sixty-one percent believed that the United States ''absolutely must''
overthrow Afghanistan's Taliban government, believed to be harboring
bin Laden, and 39 percent wanted the United States to overthrow Iraqi
President Saddam Hussein, even if he could not be directly linked to
the attacks.

``The responses suggest that Americans have strategically unrealistic
hopes and will be disappointed with anything less than full
success,'' the newspaper said.

A poll released on Friday conducted for Time Magazine and the Cable
News Network showed that Americans are prepared to wait a month or
more for military strikes on Afghanistan.

Four out of every five Americans also believe another attack on U.S.
soil is either ``very likely'' or ``somewhat likely'' within a year.

The United States has massed troops, warplanes and aircraft carriers
within striking distance of Afghanistan and demanded its Taliban
rulers avert a U.S. attack by surrendering bin Laden and the leaders
of his al Qaeda network.

It is truly sad to see so many people willing to give up rights this country worked so hard to create because their scared.  There comes a time in everyone's life when we're afraid of something, but we shouldn't let it control us.  Just because someone is afraid of the dark, doesn't mean you always have to leave your light on or that the boogie man is in the closet.  It's ridiculous!! What makes it even worse in my mind, is the idea that if we were to look into the survey's test group and examine ages and careers, the people wanting security are those who want their comfort.  They would be the ones who selfishly think only of themselves before even considering the repercussions of the notions to which they are so suddenly agreeing!!!  They would, I'm sure, be the first to complain if things didn't go the way they expected.  Sorry, I just get a little worked up about this subject!

Amazing how people think that our freedoms were handed to us. Can't they remeber that our fore-fathers fought like hell for the freedoms that our government hasn't taken away yet? I can't believe that people would be so obsessed with self-preservation that they would allow their constitutional rights to be infringed upon. Fucking sad!

This is bad, but I can say that we've allowed this to happen.  With the influx of immigrants, breakdown of our constitution, and like you all said, the fact the people are scared, lazy and just want to be comforted.

Everytime there is an additional immigrant into the US, there is another person without the history and "patriotic gene", if you will.  This, coupled amongst the ultra-liberal democracy we live in, has brought us to this point.

My fear is that this cannot be reversed, and as years pass, the future generations will not understand the importance of the Constitution and Bill Of Rights, nor will they be capable of grasping the ramifications upon its disappearance.

This un-clear and often misunderstood course of action is slowly and methodically removing our civil liberties, and this is what the constitution was written for, to protect the people from the government.

Anti-Gov phobia?  200 years ago it would have been called anti-federalism!

The constitution was written PRIOR to the federal government, and they were "phobic" then.

The people now allowing free and willing removal of their rights are those of us either, not natural born citizens or are those happy to give up their freedoms for the governments "shelter and protection(??)".

The population of these people with these views are only increasing......

Since when the fuck do you see on television, while engaged in what now I consider a worldwar, the enemies homelander crying for the rights of the innocent civilians that may die? (We are in a fucking war, the enemy has to die, their government, and unfortunately....their people) [heavy]

Jesus Christ!  How fucked up are things getting?

I'm done rambling my over emotional self today......not a day goes by a tear doesnt appear in my eye for what has happened and the people that were murdered.

The Constitution is a flexible document and doesn't apply today the way it did then.

Trade away.

I think the sheep think it's only a temporary thing.
We all know when you lose something, you never get it back.

That's it exactly!!  They always say "it's only for a little while"  and then the years go by, and people wonder what happened.  Duh!!  There are a lot more people out there like all of us, you'd think we'd have more power to put a stop to the madness ourselves.  It's frustrating to feel so powerless.  Guess I need to join the military somehow.

Uhhh, short version ?
The NG call up was, as far as I know, a request by D.C.
The NG at airports is still under State control as far as I know.

I saw them checking trunks the other day, I want to see what happens if someone refuses and says they don't have the authority.

The sheeples just don't get it.

The more they give up, the more likely this will happen more.

What if those on Flight 93 had not Given-up their Right To Keep and Bear Arms.

Sad, Willfully Ignorant sheeples, they just want to sleep in Ignorant BLISS.

If we give up our Liberties and Freedom the terrorist have Won.
