Stole this from another board:

"Quote:
Palo Alto Ca.

While I was driving south on 101 I passed by the Ikea store which has a big electronic sign.

There was one ad that said: "$1000 REWARD For info on people with guns.

The sign had a silhouette of an AR and the logo for a police dept.
The sign advised people to report gun owners at the following number 408-947-7867. Ikea appears to own the sign but they use a company called Smart Sign Media to take care of the ads that run. (800-549-7300)

I called Smart Sign Media and was told by "Cheryl" that the ad was
placed by the East Palo Alto Police. They were offering up to $1000.00 reward. I called the 408-947-7867 number and was routed to a lady in police admin at <Removed. This is an official police report line, not a complaint line>. I could not get the lady's name, but she told me that the program was designed to get the public to report young men who were seen with guns in the street.

When I asked her what happened with these reports she said that these were only considered "incidents" until an officer checked them out.
When I asked her what she meant by checking them out, she said they would dispatch an officer to the address and see if the person had the "proper paperwork" for the weapon. If not, they would confiscate the gun and hold it pending further investigation. At this point, a true report would be filed.

When I asked her to define "proper paperwork", the process for getting a gun back, etc., she got very evasive and said I had to talk to a sergeant. I was then left on terminal hold. I called back twice with
the same result.

I need the following from all of you:

<Removed.  We do not fire mission police department report lines>

B. Get people to start calling Ikea in East Palo Alto and find out why
they are allowing this to go on.

C. Get this information out to as many other 2A groups as possible.

You can get a PDF of the notice that includes a picture of the sign
here: http://www.gs2ac.com/flyers/PAPolice...Collection.pdf and on our web site.

Many thanks,
Mark Towber
President
Golden State 2nd Amendment Council"

Gave the number on the sign a call. It's a 911 dispatch number and they just told me to call 408-947-7867. That second number rang busy.

So, the Palo Alto police are not only infringing on your 2nd and 4th ammendments (right to bear arms and protection against illegal searches and seizures), but they are also encouraging people to call a 911 center frivolously.

EDIT - O.K., somebody just IMd the correct (non 911) number to me, so I editted out the one that overloads their 911 system. (Even though it's their own fault for using that one on the sign). The quote is obviously no longer an actual quote, but the essence is still there.

Asking citizens to report potential illegal activity is nothing new, nor in and of itself illegal.

If it said, "Report people with illegal guns", I would have *slightly* less of a problem with it.  But they are harassing and threatening any and all gun owners.  As a gun owner, how would you feel if you saw that sign in your town?  I'd feel pretty damn persecuted.

Here we go...

I have lots of guns.  Call them up and tell them.  You'll be providing "information on someone with guns", and will be eligible for the $1000 (the sign doesn't say "for the successful prosecution of someone for a gun-related crime).  I'm not even in their jurisidction, so even if any of my guns were "illegal", they couldn't do anything.

Then send me my half of the reward.

Doesn't say illegal guns in the advertisement.  If the police put up a sign like this for illegal aliens it would be considered racist and there would be International pressure to stop the campaign.

Double standard.  Glad I don't live there.

I just had a thought.  We should all call the number and tell them about ourselves.  Then we should all demand the money.  "Hey, I gave you info on someone with guns!  Now gimme my money!!"

Jnojr beat me to it.

Or as an alternative, we should all flood their phone line with tips on thousands and thousands of people.  Their entire system would collapse, and they would probably be sued by more than a few people.

Its their way of trying to deal with gun-involved violence. Give them a call and tell them you object to the wording of their sign and why. My point remains that it is not illegal in and of itself, nor any different than any other campaign to enlist citizen assistance in dealing with specific types of incidents. If you think we don't already get calls to check out people with guns, you'd be wrong.

Golden State 2nd Amendment Council

I wonder how many members this organization has.

Let's face fact guys, the government decides what is legal or illegal, and as well all know the state and local governments in California decided a long time ago that guns are illegal. They view guns as a menace and gun owners as a threat. Simple as that.

Nothing illegal in possessing a few guns. I think I know what the police intend, but the sign is done poorly and implies that anyone possessing a gun should be reported. Also adds to the sheeple notion that guns are bad, etc....

And CA LE are not especially known for their clear understanding of firearms rights. What do they do with the snitches who report Joe Dirt having an arsenal at his house? Do they visit or decline automatically based upon the nothingness of the call?

Typical responses I would expect. Some of you fail to admit that while YOU may own and use firearms lawfully, some people do not. I expected no different from the board though.

The weapon is not to blame, its the person using it. If you want to get violence off the street you dont go after the weapons, you go after the people that use them. That sign should read $1000 Reward: For info on people doing illegal activities.

"People with guns" is NOT illegal or "potentially illegal" activity.

Furthermore, it is an ABSURD waste of taxpayer dollars.
