He is a good article on guns on planes. He argues that it is a good idea(which we already know), but the better part is where he explains what would happen if a bullet did penetrate a plane. Check it out:

All the experts I've heard lately say the same thing.  Bullet holes are way too small to have any more than a negligable effect on cabin pressure.  That much leaks out of the plane anyway.  
About the B-17s- My father was in the Pacific and told me he saw B-17's with holes in them big enough "to fit a car into" that still flew.
