But all this talk of a National ID card had me thinking.  I travel out of the country and awful lot (my wife is a travel junky) And we don't get in or out without showing our national ID card, which I have had since I was a year old.  Namely a passport.  Am I missing something here?  Elucidate it for me if you don't mind what the differences are.  Thanks!

Having a passport is a requiremnet if you want to travel from this country or return to it. Many people don't have passports. Plus it is a choice to get one. A national ID card would be required of everyone. Sounds like they shot it down.

Of course I think that since most people have State DL's or ID's and those databases are available nationally.................

I think that the difference is that citizens don't have to show their Visa/Passport inside their own home country.

Hmmm, Ok, I guess it is a concern for having to have them for internal travel, much like you must have some sor tof ID right now, otherwise the LEO's can hold you, right?

I am in no way for this kind of a plan, jsut trying to see how a national ID would be any differnet than a DL or passport, or the states requiring you to present some sort of ID to a LEO on demand.

If you are just walking down the street and not driving a vehicle or something else that requires a license, an LEO cannot legally hold you. If he does you can get the case trown out in court.
