Figured it's time for a scatter-gun. Have never owned one. Heading to a Dick's Sporting Goods or an Ace Hardware tomorrow morning to look at a few 590 models. Prices are between $350 and $380. Does anyone own one? Pretty rugged and reliable? Any insight on this model or any others that I may want to check out would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Marinecote 590 and a regular 500. Both have 20" barrels with cylinder bores. I like them a lot. I've never had a malfunction with either of them, and I have put my 500 through the ringer.

If you want one for defensive purposes then steer clear of the longer barrel duck models. You can get 590's with an 8+1 (2 3/4" shell) capacity and the 20" cylinder bore pretty easily if you look around a little.

Mossberg, Remington, you can't go wrong. Rock-solid as a shotgun should be.

I just got rid of my homedog 500(double pistol grip 20in)

. I liked that shot gun tho............just not my style, plus im using the $$$ to build my first AR

I have seen the 590 SP (I believe this is the model) with a heat-shield, 8+1 tube, and a bayonet lug. This is what I'm aiming for.

The bayonet lug adds the ability to give zombies a taste of COLD STEEL!!!! when you run out of ammo.

Other than that, good shotgun. The bayo lug, location of safety, and location of the action lock lever are about the only practical differences between it and an appropriate 870.

Get the 590. I am having sex right now with my 500a, I love it so much. 6 for 6 all day shooting trap, no malfunctions at all.

I like the way mossys are set up (safety, etc.)....seems a little easier/quicker to work than 870, imo

The mossys are great shotguns very tough and reliable...have 2 500s

I got my 500 for $230. It's a 7+1 with a 20 inch barrel, synthetic furniture.

I've seen a few Maverick 88s for $150 or so in a pawn shop. They do make an 8 shot (7+1) Maverick 88.

True that, though if you plan to get some ninjatastic pistol grip stocks or whatnot, an 870 is probably a better choice, just because of the safety location.

*shrug*

I have a 590A1 and a SLP. No plans on getting a 870.

Thanks for the all the insight! A friend of mine had a Mossberg 500A for a while. 5+1 if I remember. His came NIB with a full stock, and a pistol grip. If the 590 SP doesn't come boxed with one, can these be bought separately?

I believe this is the exact model, minus the speed-feed stock, that both Dick's and Ace have on hand.

I have a Mossie 9200 12 gauge auto loader I have carried many mile hunting pheasants. Great gun. I have seen it cycle reloads which a pump would have trouble cycling. I have fired a few thousand rounds thru it and it is a reliable auto loader.
