February 26, 2007
Dear Mr.
Thank you for contacting me to express your strong opposition to H.R.
1022, the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of
2007,
which was introduced by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy in mid-February. As
introduced, the legislation would reinstate for ten years restrictions
on
assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices that
expired
several years ago. My colleagues who serve on the House Judiciary
Committee have initial jurisdiction on this matter.
I certainly share your concerns about H.R. 1022 and understand your
position. As you may know, I voted against the original ban of
semi-automatic weapons in 1994 as I thought the bill was seriously
flawed
and failed to meaningfully address our crime problems. As a strong
supporter of the Second Amendment, I also voted in 1996 to repeal the
ban.
Please be assured that I will be mindful of your concerns about this
legislation should it reach the full House for consideration during the
next two years. In the meantime, I hope that you will feel free to
contact me with your views on other matters of interest involving the
federal government.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,
John M. McHugh
Member of Congress
