Everybody laughs about how some dude's going to be shacked up with Bubba when he goes to jail.  I ain't much on that.  Society sentences its offenders to be confined, away from their families and lives, for a period of time.  That's fair and civil.  To accept, let alone expect and celebrate, that men thus tried by a jury of their peers might be anally violated is and always has been disturbing to me.  I'm not a softy.  I think the main problem with the death penalty is that it's applied too infrequently, and that it should be extended to child molesters, rapists, and ALL murderers.  If you have committed a crime that that doesn't deserve that sanction, however, I see no reason you should be anally violated in addition to the punishment that society has concocted for you.

Why do you think prison rape is amusing?  Don't you think it's time that we, especially as conservatives who value the rule of law above most everything and who find homosexuality repulsive, spoke up against it and tried to correct that problem?

The biggest problem with the penal system is the housing of 'first timers' with the hardened cons.

The highest suicide rate in the U.S. is white males, 18 to 30, in prison for non-violent crimes.

Excellent fucking movie.  Got it on VHS AND DVD.  Ever read the book?  If you've never read any Steven King, I'd suggest "Different Seasons."  Four short stories, three of which were made into movies, two of which were fucking classics, out of one book.

Actually just read something mentioning Bill Lockyer, AG of California.  He's swell.

Politics

The Wall Street Journal reported that during the California energy crisis, Lockyer offered up to hundreds of millions of dollars in rewards for information about illegal conduct in the energy business.[1]

[edit] Prison-rape controversy

Lockyer achieved some notoriety for a May 2001 press conference in which he said, "I would love to personally escort [Enron CEO Kenneth Lay] to an 8-by-10 cell that he could share with a tattooed dude who says, 'Hi, my name is Spike, honey'"; this statement was condemned as supporting prison rape.[2][3] Lockyer later apologized for the statement in a letter to the Los Angeles Times, saying, "My anger over the activities of energy barons doesn't come close to my lifelong outrage at the crime of rape. ... I guess I let my anger get the better of me..."[4]

He began his career as a School Board Member for San Leandro School District.

[edit] Gun Control

Lockyer's efforts in the field of gun control have met with problems. After initial publicity surrounding assault weapon issues declined post-2000, his Department of Justice failed to update the list of California-banned assault weapons for over five years. This allowed over 50,000 assault weapon frames to be imported legally into California, whose owners assembled these frames into rifles differing from the generic assault weapon legal definition. These weapons differed from banned weapons only in name and the lack of a 99-cent plastic pistol grip or a small fixed magazine.[verification needed]

In 2005, over four thousand Walther target pistols already sold to Californians had to be recalled and retrofitted. Lockyer’s DOJ had certified them to be “safe handguns” and approved for retail sale, even though they had a banned assault weapons feature at the time of certification.[verification needed]

[edit] Global Warming Public Nuisance Complaint

On September 20th 2006, Lockyer filed a lawsuit against what his office refers to as "the big six automakers" for their alleged contributions to the global warming problem. Initial reaction was mixed, with some environmental groups being supportive, and an auto industry trade calling it a "nuisance suit". A similar suit in New York had been dismissed by a federal court and is now on appeal.[5]

I do know a guy who went to federal pen (not well, an aquaintance also, used to be a nice enough guy but got fucked up on drugs and is doing 8 years on a distribution charge) and he says that it does happen, frequently enough that it's a cause of concern.

I don't find it amusing, but its a sad reality that occurs in prison from time to time, I'm told.  That being said, if I ever have to do hard time in a penal institution, I already have a set of rules that I plan to follow, near the top is to never be anyone's punk.  Should anyone attempt to make me their punk, they will be body bagged most ricky tick.

I used to work with a guy who was an ex drug dealer in Florida, he was busted and did  some time. Well one day he was under his desk picking up some papers that had fallen and me being me grabbed a 10" chrome 1/2" ratchet extension and put it inbetween my legs and started making thrusting moves towards him while he was still on the ground. He freaks out, cowers under his desk and wouldn't talk to me for the rest of the day.

Maybe prison wasn't good to him

Unfortunatly, it isn't that simple.

There are guys in prison today for stuff like self defense shootings that were ruled unjustified.

I think the idea of prison rape is appaling and that any prison guard or administrator that condones or allows it should face incarceration themselves.

The fact is that there are plenty of people in prison who have done nothing worse than having some weed or having an autosear.

When you go to prison, it is to be confined. There is nothing in the sentence from any court about being raped or beaten.

I was one of those young punks in the mid1980s who was bestowed the honor of going through the Scared Straight program.  I have to admit that spending 3 hours of my life having lifers at Rahway State Prison in NJ scream in my face how they have committed my name and face to memory and should I ever come to Rahway they would personally anally rape me and then have their friends anally rape me did cause me to reevaluate some of my life choices.

As bad as that was, there were a few scarier parts to that experience.

Depends on what you mean by "both want it". HBO did a special on prisons a few years back. One segment they interviewed this convict -- flamingly gay -- who handled all the new inmates who came to the prison. He was responsible for assigning them to a cell block. When they came in, he would give them a good cell block if they agreed to "toss his salad" (lick his asshole, etc. until he came) and a few other good things.

If they didn't agree to do it he would assign them to the cell blocks with the really bad people in them. Sooner or later they would see things his way.

Hey, whaddya know, a fellow grad!

I was a bastard too, got a first class trip to the county lockup (wiht about 14 or so others) with plans to go to a nearby prison.  Didn't need to go to the prison, big buys with bad teeth trying to grab you while you walked past was good enough for me.

I did 3 days (mandatory) for a DUI in Louisiana several years ago.

There were 2 guys in a cell across from me that were doing a year or so. Late the first night the cops brought in a drunk 18 year old. It was his birthday and he got plastered. Back then you could still purchase alcohol in the State of Luziana at 18. The next morning homeboy wakes up and the guys across from me start flirting with the 18 year old. Giving him cigarette's and talking to him like he was a hot piece of ass.

I told the 2 guys that that was messed up and I was told to mind my own business and STFU.

They (the cops) came and got the kid later that day to bring him to the courthouse, and you could tell he was ready to go! I would hope he learned a valuable lesson in that jail, and never commited another crime for the rest of his life. I can see how a scared straight program would work wonders on even the hardened gang bangers! What was said by those 2 guys in that cell topped anything that has ever made me sick. I just couldn't believe......... ugh......

Yall don't want to do time, believe me!

One of my closest friends ended up in Florida State Prison also known as Starke Prison.
He was lucky enough to have a a mentor in the county jail while awaiting sentencing and transfer to the prison at stark.
For those who don't know starke is a hole.
The old guy schooled my friend on the do's & don'ts.
6 months later he was in stark for a crime he did not commit.

How do I know he didn't commit the burglary he was charged with?
My Dad and I were in Florida that week taking things down to my parents winter home.
My friend helped us unload things that night and we were together the entire evening.

Right about now you're asking why my Dad and I didn't testify for him?
I didn't hear about his arrest and trial until it was over.
He knew we could clear him but that couldn't happen, his younger brother committed the robbery and he had already been in trouble 3 times before this and would have been sentenced to 15 years had he spoke up.

My friend thought he would receive probation at best and get his record cleared later.
He was trying to save his younger brother who in my opinion is a POS.

Well My friend had all the info to convince the detective he did it, all except one little glaring fact.
The burglary occurred at night, he told the detective that.
My friend didn't know how late.
Said he forgot.
Turns out late night burglary after a certain time is real bad in Florida, he was sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison.
he did all 5.
He did all 5 years because he was not a punk.
Hos second week in prison after the orientation period he was in the shower and some guy grabbed his ass.
He grabbed the scum bag POS by his "fro" and smashed his head and face into the tiled show wall with such force he fractured his skull and gave him perm brain damage, thus the added time which forced him to max out.

The things the old guy schooled him on came in very handy he told me.
The first day he was assigned a cell he was unpacking a black guy came walking right in and put 2 packs of cigarettes and a package of cookies on his bunk.
My friend threw him and his "gifts" out of the cell bodily.

That was the first "test" of his "standupidness"
The second and coordinated "test" was the shower incident.

There were no more tests, he passed.
From that day on until the final day he walked out he was not bothered ever again.
He was known to be whats called in jail a "nuclear white boy"
Someone who will stand up
Someone who will use great violence if you "mess" with him
Someone willing to kill to protect them self..

To this day 25 years later my friend has never even been issued a parking ticket.
He was innocent but made a bad choice.

I am in the process of trying to get my friend an expungement or pardon from Florida.

One of my guys in the Guard worked at Central Prison in Raleigh. He's not the type of man who exagerates. So while I doubt that it's fairly common at the minimum sec. prisons here in NC (it seems like every county has one) it sounds pretty common at the big house up at the capital.

Man Convicted Of Lying To Beat Ticket Faces Prison

(AP) REDWOOD CITY A 42-year-old man is facing up to four years in prison for allegedly lying to beat a $215 traffic ticket.

A San Mateo County jury convicted Andrew Bamberg Fridy of felony perjury and preparing false evidence for traffic court.

Bamberg was ticketed in 2004 for allegedly running a stop sign in Redwood City.

Prosecutors accused him of presenting photographs in court from a different intersection and later lying about the photos.

A lawyer for Bamberg says the officer who issued the ticket wrote down the wrong intersection.

-----> Pay $215 for a Traffic Ticket or try and beat it and risk getting butt fucked for 4 years...

Tough Choice...

When you go to jail, the Gov't removes your ability to defend yourself, feed yourself and most all the normal liberties we take for granted. Therefore, the Gov't assumes these responsibilities.

What would you think if we locked people up and then didn't feed them? Same thing, WE are responsible for their safety. Every effort should be made to keep prisoners safe. Prisons should be designed to allow more thorough supervision and any form of sex should be totally banned in prison.

Its not so easy to stop, if the establishment in question is understaffed as they normally are the world over it makes it very difficult to see everything that goes on, the victim very rarely speaks up through fear of reprisals, this makes it very difficult to police what goes on.

And where might you have found this second bit of information?  It does not agree with my work experience.  In all the years I have been working suicides, I have removed only 2 from the local state prison.  I average 40 - 60 suicides per year.  I have been doing this for 20 years now.  The usual inmates I remove from the prisons have died in the infirmary from known diseases or from drug overdoses, although once in a while one of them has some assistance also.  We have a state prison and a county prison in the county in which I work.

I'm no architect or engineer, but I can think of a few changes. One is "lights on 24/7".  Another idea I have is to design the prison so that there are no enclosed rooms where inmates are together. Each room would have all 4 walls topped with a catwalk for guards who tote pepper spray or beanbag guns. Add a way for the guards to enter the population quickly for further riot control.

I'm sure there has been a ton of thought put into this by people who actually have a clue on this. I believe prisons can be designed and run far better than they are now.

That's horrible logic you have there.

What if the prison guards were cutting off the genitals of inmates who were in there for non violent crimes (maybe a home defense shooting in the wrong state)?  If the thread starter was mad about that, would you just say "Don't commit a crime then you have no need to worry about getting your penis cut off."?

I work in a new Prison(3yrs old ) of a modern layout , places like Holloway & other Victorian prisons are full of those little hiding places you spoke of, but even in my Establishment which is designed to eliminate these faults it still comes down to manpower in the end, most of the time we only have on Officer per wing of 35 Inmates
