Senate backs concealed permit bill

DENVER (AP) - A proposal that would bar Colorado residents from getting concealed weapons permits from other states is moving ahead at the state Capitol.

Friday the full Senate gave final approval to the measure, which would also prevent visitors from using permits from states other than their home state.

Senator John Morse, a Democrat from Colorado Springs, says the state has the right to keep track of who has a permit in Colorado. The permits are good for five years and he says the state may need to revoke that permit if the holder gets into trouble with the law.

Senator Greg Brophy voted against the measure. The Republican from Wray said the bill unfairly targets people who are following the law and getting the necessary permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Is this removing reciprocity or is it meant to prevent, for example, an Ohio resident from using a Florida non-resident permit?

I'm still trying to figure out how this conservative state turned into a democraptic outpost. Geez, those Kalifornicators and illegals are taking over.

Probably too many CO residents are choosing to just get UT or FL permits, so CO can't monitor and control them. MO is complaining about the same thing.

Boulder was the original "infestation". Denver has become just another mega-urban insect colony and those ALWAYS go Socialist. The rest of the state has no chance at that point.

Hell, Missoula here in MT has < 60,000 people, but 20,000 of them are part of the University and the city votes solidly democrapic. Boulder all over again.

No state escapes this. Those in the south have managed to delay it but as population rises EVERY state will reach a tipping point where those live in their "urban paradise" make all the rules governing people in rural areas that they know (or care) nothing about.

Atlanta tries the same shit here in Georgia.

It seems wherever the biggest shithole with the largest population is in any given state, it will dominate the state's political tilt.

There is usually a solid fight here in our legisalture against Atlanta and what Atlanta wants, and someone will eventually say "Hey, we have more state here than just Atlanta" during the course of events.

I think there IS a solution to this problem, but it's not going to happen.

State legislatures need an area-based representative body ("senate") to balance a population-based body ("house"). One senator per county for example.

Arizona ran into the same problem a few years ago. AZ residents were obtaining CCW permits from Utah (because AZ recognizes Utah permits), and they were using those permits instead of applying for Arizona permits. So, if you are an Arizona resident you must obtain an AZ permit to legally carry in that state.

I'd like to add that Arizona has a weird law that says if you were ever convicted of a felony and you have had your rights restored, or you have received a pardon (from the Governor or even the President) you cannot legally own a firearm.

Maybe that's why some residents were using the Utah permits and not applying for Arizona permits.

You would have to have a carry permit issued by your home state.
Non-resident permits from any state would not be honored.

What this probaly really comes down to is local control and taxes.

Colorado wants more control over who CCW's in their state. Plus they want the tax revenue from colorado CCW permits.

Just like most stes wont let you register you vehicle in another state because they want the tax money from their residents.
