SAS GET CHANCE TO TRY OUT NEW GUN

SAS soldiers operating deep inside Afghanistan may soon have a chance to
carry out the first large-scale trials of their favourite rifle.

The elite regiment is particularly impressed with a Canadian carbine known
as the C8, according to Terry Gander, of Jane's Infantry Weapons.

He said: "They've been using it for about 12 months and this could be the
occasion that they really test it."

But he stressed that if, as is widely reported, the SAS are already at work
in Afghanistan, their most important weapon would be their radios.

He said: "Their main role particularly at this stage is surveillance and
intelligence and they would want to avoid combat and use radios to transmit
information very quickly to be decoded.

"In terms of weapons, they like to take whatever is suitable for their mission.

"They are likely to have the C8 to which they attach a grenade launcher
                                which fires 40mm grenades.

"If they are going deep into somewhere like Afghanistan it is not beyond the
realms of possibility that they would take Kalashnikov assault rifles with
them, because of the availability of ammunition.

"Even though they are expected to carry their own body-weight in terms of
general equipment and weapons for prolonged periods of time, they would
still want to carry as much firepower with them as they possibly can,
because without it, there's not much point in them being there."

Some reports suggest that the Diemaco C8 carbines were used by the SAS in the operation in Sierra Leone to snatch the British soldiers held hostage there.

Diemaco has a SFW(Special Forces Variant) of the normal C8 carbine. Í think it is the SFW variant they are using.
