This is just insanity! The damn sheeple want to repeat history again.

Frightening numbers: 49% in new survey
support 'special IDs' for Arab-Americans

WASHINGTON, DC -- Americans who want to fight terrorism by mandating
Taliban-style "special identification" for Arab-Americans, by allowing
police to randomly search people, and by giving the government the
power to read e-mail are making a disastrous mistake, Libertarians
said
today.

A poll taken last week found that substantial minorities of Americans
support such measures in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks
on
the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

But such a response -- while understandable in light of the horror and
devastation caused by terrorists -- is not only wrong, it's un-
American, said Steve Dasbach, the national director of the Libertarian
Party.

"We won't triumph over terrorism by giving away our nation's precious
heritage of freedom," he said. "Our ultimate triumph over terrorism
will come only if we remain, in the face of this murderous onslaught,
a
nation that honors civil liberties, limited government, and freedom.

"To do otherwise not only dishonors the Americans who perished in the
September 11 attacks -- it dishonors every American who has fought and
died to keep this country free."

However, many Americans seem to disagree. To fight terrorism, a USA
Today/CNN/Gallup Poll found that:

* 29% would allow police to randomly search people.

* 49% would mandate special IDs for Arabs in this county -- including
American citizens of Arab descent.

* 33% would make it easier for law enforcement to tap phones and read
mail or e-mail messages.

* 58% would require special security checks for Arabs -- including
American citizens -- before boarding commercial flights.

Such numbers are chilling, said Dasbach.

"Consider the willingness of some Americans to require Arab-Americans
to carry special identification," he said. "Such a proposal has
horrific echoes of Nazi Germany requiring Jewish citizens to wear Star
of David armbands and of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban requiring non-
Moslems to wear special identifiers.

"To support such a proposal is not only wrong -- it's shameful."

The fact that 29% of Americans would allow police to randomly search
people is also frightening, said Dasbach.

(continued)

"In America, the idea that you are innocent until proven guilty is
enshrined in the Bill of Rights," he said. "The Fourth Amendment
guarantees your right to be free from unreasonable searches and
seizures.

"If the Fourth Amendment is repealed -- a notion that almost one-third
of Americans seem to endorse -- police would have virtually unlimited
power to stop, harass, and search you. Terrorists would not be the
primary victims of such a proposal -- innocent Americans would be."

While some of these proposals seem far-fetched and are unlikely to be
implemented, Americans should keep in mind that similar proposals have
become law in the past, said Dasbach.

* During the Civil War, newspaper editors in the North were imprisoned
for espousing sympathy for the Confederacy.

* During World War II, Japanese-Americans were put into internment
camps.

* During World War I, Congress made it a crime to use "abusive
language" about the government or the military. It took 50 years for
the Supreme Court to strike down that Sedition Act of 1918.

* During the Vietnam War, the FBI and CIA launched a special program
to
spy on and discredit anti-war activists like the Rev. Martin Luther
King, Jr.

Given America's less-than-stellar defense of liberty during times of
war, it's reasonable to worry that public support for anti-terrorism
measures might help turn them into law, said Dasbach -- and that's a
danger that must be guarded against.

"In a time of national crisis, we must remain more vigilant than ever
in defending the freedoms that make America unique in the world," he
said. "Americans must remember: Freedom isn't free. There is a price
you must pay to defend it, and that price is eternal vigilance.

"And Americans need to be reminded that the enemy of terrorism isn't
restrictions, repression, and regulations. The ultimate enemy of
terrorism is freedom."

Isn't this what internment camps are for?  Come on, anyone can fake an ID.  Let's make sure to take their assets under RICO statutes as well. Come on people, it is all for the good of the country.

I am not sure how to express what I think about all this, but I will try my best.

I am all for increased security around government/public buildings like parks, airports, state capitals, etc.  This would include things like metal detectors, armed guards, even the inspection of suspicious bags when neccessary.

I am against a national ID card simply for the reason that we already have them in the form of SSN# cards and state drivers licenses, so another card is just more paperwork and excess government.

However, in turn for this additional security I would like to see the creation of a trained civilian defense force which would include CCW for all who pass the training program.  I mean really, let's think about this....crime would go down dramatically overnight and in the event of a terrorist attack people would have overwelming power to fight back!!

Of all the various ideas I have heard come from this whole ordeal the only sane one was airline pilots wanting to be armed during flights.

In short, I would be willing to give up convience, but not freedom, in exchange for the power to properly protect myself(read CCW).

"News polls" are patent bullshit, unadulterated by the truth..

Let me guess, this poll was conducted in NY state, on September 12?

Any pollster can skew the results of a poll, by the way the question is put.. The base question can be very neutral, and unbiased, but if the person phoned/polled asks "Could you elaborate"? or "Could you explain that further"? then the pollster's personal biases begin to affect the outcome..

Nuff said.

If this is true people are acting out of fear. I'm sure if nothing else happens peoples anxiety will subside. I blame the Democrats and their supporters for what is happening now to our country. Bill and the Demodogs were allowed to sell our secrets and all but destroy our domestic and military security without impunity, because of the American peoples unqualified support for this POS. I wonder if Klintongs supporters still think character doesn't matter and his world without borders is the way to go.

Just beef up the INS.  Imprison any immigration violators for 3-10 years, then boot them out after they've done their hard labor.  Let them pave roads or something.

End immigration for 10 to 20 years.  We need time to assimilate what we got - the legal ones.

Any immigrant not willing to swear and sign a loyalty oath should face immediate deportation.

WHAT "PARTY OF ANARCHISTS" DO I BELONG TO?

Since you are liberal and obviously a sorry product of an outcome based education let me help you:

anarchist- An anarch; one who advocates anarchy of aims at the overthrow of civil government.

an·ar·chy- 1. Absence of government; the state of society where there is no law or supreme power; a state of lawlessness; political confusion.

PLEASE TELL ME AND EVERYONE ELSE HERE WHERE I HAVE CALLED FOR ANARCHY.

I think you are having a case of the pot calling the kettle black for it is people like you that want mob rule, which is much closer to anarchy than a CONSTUTIONAL REPUBLIC WHICH I WANT.

I could lower myself to your level and call you a FUCKING ASSHOLE, but I won't. I am not even going to hold my breath waiting for an apology from you or MIerinMD.

My phone call to Michael Jackson was of no benefit either.

Whoa big fella!  Now while I did indeed call into question the existence of the poll, my main point was that people were willing to unconditionally accept what was said on this board without evidence.  As far as you being some freaky anarchist, well...that's someone else's flame.

I WILL apologize directly to you for not believing in the existence of this particular poll and thereby impugning your integrity.

Please provide links in the future for we "doubting Thomases"
