This saying has been ascribed to no one in particular, but was commonly referred to simply as 'an old English' saying, that was found carved on fireplace mantels in England.

The one place that claims to have begun the custom is the Hind's Head Hotel, near London, where it is carved into the mantelpiece in the main dining room.
