Elite has nothing to do with it - every able bodied male (and I suspect the females, too) in Afghanistan will be dangerous, and will kill you without a second thought.
The Afghan "Army" is ~40000 soldiers - the country's population is ~25 million. The souls that do not support the Taliban will be defending the homeland, regardless of their opinion of the Taliban. This serious war will likely extend from Mauritania in northwest Africa, about halfway down the eastern coast of Africa, east to Pakistan, and possibly into Indonesia and Malyasia. |

Here is a comparison of the US v. Afghanistan:
Population: 275 million v. 25 million GDP: $9,255 bilion v. $21 billion Manpower available for military service: 70 million v. 6 million. Cold comfort, as Vietnam was probably even more lopsided. |

Just a slightly different perspective:

Other afghanis are running for the border. Taliban made the same move other tyranical governments do: They disarmed the citizenry to keep them in control. So the taliban has weapons, but they don't dare let the civies have them because of their fear of reprisal. Some of the taliban are going into 'looting' mode. Those that can are getting out of dodge. Plus there's the opposition force that's fighting the taliban. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but if we go into afghanistan, it's not going to be like it was with the russians. There's no superpower backing them up. They're not fighting for their homeland like they did with russia, they're going to be fighting for their tyrants. Some of them don't like their tyrants. |

I do not see any reason to occupy Afghanistan. Why would we want to hold it? Just go in, do what needs to be done and get out. That is a very big difference from what the Soviets were doing. They wanted to conquor and control the entire country. We just want to bust up bin Laden and friends and put them out of action for good. After that we have little interest in Afghanistan. They already have enough problems to keep themselves busy for a very long time. Watch-Six

Is that an H&K ? WTF are Afghanis doing with Expensive European Guns ? I thought they only used Cheapo AKs.
As for Vietnam the U.S. had a 20:1 Kill Ratio and still lost. In Aghanistan Russia had a 60:1 Kill Ratio. How many people you kill doesn't count when they keep coming at you. It only counts when you kill 'em all. That means 6 Million Aghanis:100,000 Americans if Russia's Average Holds true. If America's holds true we are looking at 300,000 American KIAs. The only way to help is to Nuke Kabul and any other cities that have large populations in order to prevent uneccessary loss of American Lives. |

Pakistan make exact copies of the G3 and MP5 without a license.I used to buy Paki parts and mags as spares when I was still under the mistaken impression that HKs were worth a crap.

We could soften up Afghanistan by parachuting in crack liberal defeatist busybodies. We sure have a surplus around here.
Also, we could undercut the Taliban's control by beaming in Gangstah Rap, Marilyn Manson, and Ricky Lake from Air Force psychological operations planes. Declare large areas "gun-free school zones". Oh, sorry guys, this corrosive social manipulation is *only* being carried out against AMERICA. You guys do recall that SW dude saying he had military contracts right? Unlike Cuba, no trading with the enemy clause? I still believe that nuking Afghanistan is a viable option that should be exercised. The smart ones are already leaving the country before the SHTF. Even the media outlets want nukes.
