There's some cool animation from a university in Florida that goes (by one order of magniture I think), all the way from the Milky Way (one of billions of galaxies), down to "normal" scale, and then down to the subatomic level.

Think about this… If a star, somewhere in the universe, exploded every time someone masturbated. And if this had been going on since the first caveman found another use for his hands. Then, it still wouldn’t have put a dent in the total number of stars. That’s how big the universe is. (Now, if you’ll excuse me I gotta go wipe out another star system.) |

What gets me about the Hubble Deep Field picture (above), is that even the tiniest visible dots in that image are galaxies. I wish that in the future a special telescope is developed to do a really deep field image. The Hubble one took around 20 days. I want to see one that takes about a year.

The world's largest model of the Solar System is found here. It shows the size of planets, AND relative distance between planets. It is several miles wide!

I looked into what it would take to make a scale model of the solar system. If Pluto was a .17 cal bb, the sun would be like 10 feet in diameter and would be 6 miles away, Earth would be 1 inch in diameter and 300 yards away from the Sun. The universe is a BIG place. |
