I have a few thoughts that run through my mind whenever I see a Viagra, Lamisil, Nexium, Prilosec or some other purple pill advertisement on the tele or magazine.

1) is this REALLY necessary?  If you have a problem and see a doctor, isn't it HIS responsibility to prescribe meds to you instead of you offering it up?

2) Seems to me the millions that drug makers spend on these ads could be better used to help lower the overall costs of meds.  I do understand R&D costs, but do that have to also burden that total with advertising costs?

What's your 2 cents?

Why do you think drug costs in the US are out of control?

Im all for the free market, but here was a reason we used to not let drug companies advertise.

Drug companies are like big oil... Most people don't understand the amount of money these  guys bring in..

To bring a new drug to market (not rerelase an old drug with something added because the patent was about to run out) can cost a drug Co as much as $5 BILLION dollars! So in turn they will charge as much as the market will pay for such drugs. With insurance and the drug Co's in lockstep this can cause the price of drugs to be over $5 FOR ONE PILL!!!

The patents on drugs are very short, usually only 5 years. Turning a profit on a $5 billion dollar investment can be hard to do... Then the patent runs out.. This is when you see the ads for drugs.. Once the patent is up anyone who wants to can now make the drug and sell it as generic. Srug Co's will run ads to keep your mind off the lower priced copy so they can keep the profit up.

IMO this is a bunch of bullshit! I have some problems that cause me to have to take up to 17 pills a day. One of them costs $3.75 per pill.. I take 8 of these a day.. If I did not have good insurance and my father was not a doctor and getting free samples I would be in a world of shit....

"Big Pharma's" strangle hold on the world has been exposed thanks to Kevin Trudeau and other authors as well as websites like Natural Cure Secrets.
There are alternative medicines that have been proven to be just as effective, or more effective than the outrageously priced prescription drugs and people are taking notice.
This is why we are seeing the aggressive marketing tactics.
Theses alternatives are not nearly as dangerous and have virtually no side effects.
The FDA and .gov are now trying to pass regulations on the sale of these alternative "dietary supplements" so that
they won't cut into the multi-BILLION DOLLAR profits of Big Pharma.

Read up on the CODEX Conspiracy

By Dr. Matthias Rath, M.D.

There is an entire industry with an innate economic interest to obstruct, suppress and discredit any information about the eradication of diseases. The pharmaceutical industry makes over one trillion dollars from selling drugs for ongoing diseases. These drugs may relieve symptoms, but they do not cure. We have to realize that the mission of this industry is to make money from ongoing diseases. The cure or eradication of a disease leads to the collapse of a multi-billion dollar market of pharmaceuticals.

The natural purpose and driving force of the pharmaceutical industry is to increase sales of pharmaceutical drugs for ongoing diseases and to find new diseases to market existing drugs.

By this very nature, the pharmaceutical industry has no interest in curing diseases. The eradication of any disease inevitably destroys a multi-billion dollar market of prescription drugs as a source of revenues. Therefore, pharmaceutical drugs are primarily developed to relieve symptoms, but not to cure.

......

Next time you have a 'condition' try one of the alternatives first. Then stock up on them because it appears they wont be available in the near future if .gov has their way.

I personally have had success with the ones I've used.

We have a population that generally *DEMANDS* to be told what to do, what to buy and what to think via "The Media".  Few think for themselves and fewer actively seek out information, they simply respond to whatever shit they're fed.

Now you have them bombarded with ideas about every form of disease known to mankind and urge them to seek out drugs to "help" them.

Create FUD in the mind of the consumer about their health and then at the same time, offer them a "solution" (for the right price).

I'm sick of it (no pun intended).

I get a kick out of the commercials for "Restless Legs Syndrome".    How the hell is that any kind of a condition?

While the cost of Rx meds in the US are out of control, I consider advertising on TV a serious misallocation of financial resources.  It's just as bad as the "drug reps" that get a car allowance, 90k salary, and an expense account to wine and dine physicians and providers so they'll use or prescribe the newest and best designer drug.

That's my .02.

Not only annoying, but they're stupid.

"Ask your Doctor about XXXXX."

Usually, nowhere in the ad do they even mention what condition the drug is supposed to treat.  I can just see myself walking into the Doctor's office saying, "I saw a commercial for XXXXX.  I'm supposed to ask you if it's right for me."

Fucking ridiculous.

Think about this, if a medication costs $20 a day, but it keeps you out of the hospital, is the price really "out of control"?

I agree that that ads are unnecessary.. visit your dr, tell him your problem, let him give you your options..

The ads remind me of the joke one of the Blue Collar Tours Guys tells about his wife being a hypocondriact - "But honey, you dont even have testiculars!!"

They don't really bother me but I don't watch much TV anyway.

I actually like the commercials for Actonel.  The actress on those is pretty hot for an old bag.

You need to take a basic marketing course.

It's the same reason why Intel advertises.

I hate that, too!  It's one thing if you have asthma and they say "Here's a new asthma medication... ask your doctor."  But wtf, if there is no clue as to what the med is for, then why do I even want to watch the commercial?  I can just see myself asking my doctor about a new pill, only to be told that it is for enlarged prostate or erectile dysfunction or something.  No way.

Marketing creates demand.
Have you ever noticed all of these drugs advertised are ones you take every day?  Not just when you don't feel well.  Wonder why that is?  Why do you need to take an allergy medication in the winter in fucking Montana?  Not for you, but for the drug companies profits.
I think the drug companies are guilty of making up "diseases" so they have something to peddle.  Restless leg syndrome, and acid reflux come to mind.

it's branding. you imprint the name in the consumer's mind. why do we buy kleenex when there's a multitude of other brands of tissue?

in the penis-pill department there's viagra, cialis and levitra, but viagra is the name people use the most in conversations, jokes, whatever...

once you get the consumer to identify your product's name as the actual product then you've got it made.

how come it seems there are far more defenders of big oil than big pharmas here? to me they're both the same as far as being profiteering, unethical, and necessary evils. you guys own more oil stock?

Be glad you don't need Zyvox, they are about $60 a pill. Then again, if you need to take Zyvox the cost is the least of your worries anyway. I worked for a company that worked on marketing for the Pharmas and this was one of many drugs we worked with.
