Thanks for the info, guys, on the universals earlier.

I have now stumbled upon (almost literally) a Plainfiel Mfg. M1 carbine in excellent-new condition.  The asking price is $320.  Should I seal the deal, or walk?

Plainsfield are about like Iver Johnson except they have alloy trigger assembly. Although they are ok, the parts are softer and if they start causing problems, you can switch them out with USGI parts.
IMHO, I wouldn't pay more than $225 for it, I picked one up last year for $195 in LNC,with 3 boxes of ammo and 4-15 round mags. Sold it for a little profit and kept the ammo and 2 mags.

Agree with ar-snpr, price is high.

It does seem though that M-1 carbines have really started to go up.

Not to quibble, but some Plainfields have triggerguards made of brazed stampings.
