Have any of you seen the show on Georgia Public Broadcasting called "Celtic Woman"?
That's some good music from some FINE women! I normally don't watch that sort of thing but I've watched the same show 3 times now! |
Who doesn't like talented red-haired women? I have seen the DVD for sale at WalMart.
I saw that. It was some good stuff. |
Sounds like my Wife. |
I am convinced that Irish women have the most beautiful voices in the world. |
google "celtic woman" and you'll find them - - - www.celticwoman.com/index.asp |

Speakin' of Gaelic lasses...what does your quote above your avatar mean? I watched Celtic Woman too. Dear GOD those women can sing. Many of them were indeed very pretty. The fiddler (if I am not mistaken) I met when she toured with an Irish dance group (Riverdance or Lord of the Dance---I've seen both and cannot remember which she toured with) IMHO, Irish music is the best music. |

Beautiful music and performances.
Extremely talented women. The vocals are what I would call "heavenly" because it's almost too good to be real. I listen to "Celtic Woman" on CD in my truck all the time. |
Aren't some of them from other places, other than Ireland ? Thought one in the interveiw between performances said she was from New Zealand. Anyway they have a lot of talent. Wife kept commenting on the nostalgic costums and stuff. |

Hmmmmm..... Mairead Meav Orla Lisa Chloe David One of these girls is not like the others.... One of these girls is not quite the same..... |

Saw the special, and then my wife bought me the CD. Good shit. I especially like the remake of "May it be" originally sung by Enya.

I friggin' love Celtic Woman. They're awesome. Celtic, folk, and accapella harmonies are some of my favorite types of music. They do all beautifully.
May favorite song of theirs is "Walking in the air" from an 80's animated movie "The Snowman". It's an amazing song (I'd also recommend the movie for anyone looking for a great X-mas movie this season). That song really does sound like angels. I'm going to have to catch them the next time their tour comes to town. I missed the last one and regretted it. |

Come again? |

"Every single assistance is from God." |

Very good... |

The website doesn't have my favorite. The one that sings Scarborough Fair on the PBS show
ETA: this one I liked her voice the most and also thought she was the cutest |
Tapadh Leat! and Slainte! (Other than some curses and Scottish clan mottos, that's the extent of my Gaelic ) Someone mentioned that one of the ladies may NOT be from Ireland. I would not be surprised. Remember, there are Seven Celtic nations (and there's even a Celtic rock band by that name: Seven Nations (whose music is freaken AWESOME!) Those Seven Celtic Nations are: Scotland, Wales, Cornwall , Isle of Man, Galicia & Asturias, Brittany , Ireland. Punctuation Edit |

Haley Westenra is the singer you are talking about. She's 18 or 19 and from New Zealand Has a few solo albums out. Lovely girl with tons of promise in her. I don't think she's a permanent member of Celtic Woman. She doesn't mention it on her website and she is barely mentioned on the Celtic Woman website. I think she's better the Celtic Woman anyhow. I bloody hate the fiddler. The prancing around tossing her hair routine gets pretty old pretty quick. Just play the effing music already. |
I've said it a million times.....
Irish Women are Teh Shizzle fo' dizzle dazzle! Nothing better. |
While drinking many beers in Palma, Mallorca I met a sexy redhead Irish chick I used this line on her... "You speak pretty good English for an Irish chick." Wasn't until the next day when I sobered up did I realize why she found it so funny.
Oh well, it worked out fine in the end. |
That show is a few years old. We have 4 PBS affiliated stations in metro Los Angeles area. And I've watched them several time, never too tired or dull, even though it is a repeat. Network broadcast TV is such a wasteland and is so bad now that I only watch it very sparingly, and many times when I watch, it is PBS only stations.

There's something about Mairead that makes my underwear fit kinda funny....

Same here. Never even heard of them till this weekend, when I was channel surfing. Saw bits of one or two songs from their show at Slane Castle, which were OK. Decided to actually sit through one, which was just starting. It was “The Last Rose of Summer”, with Hayley Westenra (who apparently is new to the group and is from New Zealand). She strolled out by herself - looking like a skinny, bashful schoolgirl with wet hair. I thought to myself: “This is going to be terrible!” She stated to sing. I melted into a puddle on the floor! Got it on tape now. I really need to transfer it to DVD before I wear out the tape. The two drummers in the show appear to be bikers! |

The Black Velvet Band.... a GREAT Irish tune!
This thread is making me want a Guinness in the worst way. BLACK VELVET BAND In a neat little town they call Belfast Apprenticed in trade I was bound And many's the hour of sweet happiness I spent in that neat little town Till bad misfortune befell me That caused me to stray from the land Far away from my friends and relations To follow the black velvet band Chorus: Her eyes they shone like the diamond You'd think she was queen of the land And her hair hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band As I was out strolling down broadway Not intending to go very far I met with a frolicksome damsel Applying her trade in a bar Well a watch she took from a customer And she slipped it right into my hand Then the Watch came and put me in prison Bad luck to the black velvet band Before judge and jury next morning For our trial I had to appear The judge, he said, "My young fellow, The case against you is quite clear. Well seven years is your sentence. You're going to Van Dieman's Land. Far away from your friends and relations To follow the black velvet band." So come all you jolly young fellows I'd have you take warning by me Whenever you're out on the liquor Beware of the pretty colleen For she'll fill you with whiskey and porter Until You're not able to stand And the very next thing that you notice You've landed in Van Dieman's Land |
She gained some weight for the current PBS show, but she seems to have lost it if you watch their commentary at the end. (and went a bit blonder ) She is very pretty, even with a few extra pounds. Plus her voice is amazing. I automatically fall in love with women with great voices. Probably one of the sexiest things a woman can have. |
Sirens. 'Nuff said. |
I refer to her as "the thick one". I can't decide which one is my favorite though. There ain't nothing wrong with the fiddler by the way! I like the way she dances around all fairy-like(did I just say that?) showing leg! My wife says they are lip synching. I could care less what they're doing with their lips! |
I caught the "Celtic Women" DVD presentation on public broadcasting while channel surfing. I'm not a fan of Celtic folk music or anything else where the music totally sucks. Yes, the women were attractive but I couldn't stomach the show.
Now, to flee the oncoming barrage of hate replies. |
You're not gonna like Heaven much.... God's Irish. |
I found it a refreshing change to see only white people in any TV show.
Both performers and audience. The ladies were incredible. |
Have you heard the ronnie drew version of the song? I love that song. I love the female Clannad singers voice as well. |
Thanks for the white supremacist's POV. |
Clannad is awesome.... also Dead Can Dance. Have not heard Ronnie Drews version, let me look on the web for it. Black Velvet Band is a classic song! How bout The Wild Rover???? And it's no, nay, never, <insert claps here> No nay never no more, <few more claps go here> Will I play the wild rover No never no more. Man this is a good thread. |

Check out the Dropkick Murphys version Its different but its great! |
Ronnie Drew has the coolest raspy old irish man voice, just amazing, he does a lot of storytelling songs, and hes also part of some band I don't remember the name of.

I have seen Celtic Women, Twice live on stage in Grand Prarie Texas.
If you like them on PBS or on their DVD, (amazon.com) you will love them in person. My favorites are "Send me a Song" and "The Galie" My girlfriend just bought me their Christmas CD this weekend and I plan on opening it up tonight. They sure put on a Great show! Nick |
I think you might mean "The Ceilidh" (pronounced Kay-lee) It's Gaelic for "party." I remember that song from the PBS program. It is good! |
Great thread!
Roo, I know what you mean about Dolories O'Riordan - beautiful voice! I'm a big fan of Andrea Corr as well, and her sisters, Sharon and Caroline. I love Irish music - everything from traditional to punk. Gotta love Irish women! |
