I'm sitting here listening to some different Country music and it got me to thinking.
In 1994 the first girl I was going to marry broke up with me and I remember that the sad country songs gave me comfort but it was the happy ones that talked about people being in love that hurt me. I thought it was supposed to be the opposite. Also things that you think you can't live through are just memories 10 years later. |
I'm surprised that more suicides aren't attributed to country music.
It's a silent epidemic. |
In '77 the love of my life broke up with me. I got in my car, fired it up, and slapped the 8 track in the radio. Love Hurts came on next, I pulled the tape out of the radio, and thru it out the window. I miss that tape. |
Ban it!!!!! For the children, of course |

All I know is, as I left that cunt in my rear view mirror on a rainy day, Garth Brooks "The Dance" came on the radio. That tubby redneck (millionaire) hit the nail on the head for me that day.

I listen to and appreciate almost all types of music but, other than sincere, soulful gospel, no music genre can get at my emotions and bring me to tears like country music.
I'm not talking about the mournful she-left-me-my-dog-died-a-tornado-tore-up-the-trailer-my-pickup-truck-got-repossessed-I-just-found-out-my-new-girlfriend-is-my-double-cousin kind of country songs that are the butt of so many jokes... I'm talking about the sweet, sincere songs that shouldn't be tear-jerkers but are, especially the first time you hear them. I was alone in the car the other day and heard the new one from the young man who recently had a hit with "If You're Going Through Hell" (I'll have to look up his name, can't remember ). It's about his relationship with his young son, who's emulating his every behavior, and it's called "I've Been Watching You." I have a 3YO son... I was squawling like a baby by the end of the song. It wasn't a sad song at all, but it really touched my heart. (At this point, my wife would be telling me "You're such a girl!" ) As soon as I got back to a computer, I ordered his first album just based on that song (I liked his first one, too). I noticed among the playable samples when I ordered it that there is a song on there about boys coming to meet him before dating his daughter, titled something like "Cleaning My Guns (Come On In!)"... can't wait to hear that one in its entirety! |

Rodney Atkins... I don't know why that just won't stick with me. I really like his stuff (and have since discovered he's not as "new" as I had thought ). Here is a LINK to the album in question on Amazon, with sample song snippets (including the ones I mentioned above). |

are you saying that they actually make happy country songs? |
oh brother hearin Kathy Mattea sing " Life as we knew it" and Patty Loveless sing " Don't toss us away" when you're goin thru a break-up will riiiiiiiip your guts out !!!! but as far as happy songs ? listen to Hank Williams sing " Settin the woods on fire " or Hank Snow sing " Would you mind? ".
Its the stories man. Thats why country music is popular. Bluegrass is even more sad than country. Actually listen to the words in a bluegrass album.
Yup but you have to play them backwards! |
There are plenty of happy country songs...
David Allen Coe - Take this Job and Shove it Brad Pasily - I'm Gonna Miss Her Alan Jackson - 5 o'clock somewhere All have a positive message |
man when I listen to hickory nut music, it makes me want to fight, drink and smoke cheap cigerrettes, gotta say though, theres a lot of chicks that like to listen to it, and they all like to play cowgirls and nden.
One of our local country stations has a radio show where they only play happy country songs. Wish I could remember what it's called. |

The next time you get dumped, stay at home all night by yourself and clean your guns while listening to Garth Brooks sing "The Dance". |
Im sitting here and i kicked my dog, and he barked and i hate a barking dog, so i shot him, oh yea, sing along if you like...................
Why would I do that? Ak's clean themselves... don't they? |

+1000 I grew up, and now live, in Chicago (or actually 10 miles outside of the city limits), but I went to school at U of I -Champaign and Indiana Univ. I learned about country from friends from Southern IL and IN, and have been a fan ever since (I also listen to alternative, classic rock, some pop etc), but there is something about the stories in countries that makes it so appealing. I would suggest people who have not given country a try check out George Strait (I just want to dance with you, Write this down or cowboys like us), Toby Keith - I love this Bar Beer for my horses, how do you like me now (fun songs); I foget who sings it - but Letters from Home (at least to me) is a tear jerker - about soldier reading letters from home - or Darryl Worly - Awful beautiful life. Everyone in my life after I learned of country and introduced them has made it a part of theirs - I shit you not. |

To answer the OP's question...
Nothing is so painful in sad times as memories of happier times. This applies to listening to happy songs. It reminds you of what you've lost. |
I thought that was Johnny Paycheck. |
I guess you've all heard what happens when you play country music backwards?
An oldie but goodie ... |
You know what happens if you play a country record backwards?
You get your woman back, your dog back, your truck back, your house back, your- |

Lived most of my life in the South and never did like country music...until a year or so ago.
Listening to the Alison Krauss "Live" album right now. Excellent. |

She's classy ... Not bad looking either. |

I've never shed a tear for a movie, cried at a funeral, and barely over a girl, but when I heard Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley I honestly got a little choked up. I'm not really a country fan, but as a songwriter the song was pretty powerful.

Sad song. "Alyssa Lies" by Jason Michael Carroll 1st Verse My little girl met a new friend just the other day On the playground at school Between the tires and the swing But she came home with tear-filled eyes And she said to me, 'Daddy, Alyssa lies' 2nd Verse Well, I just brushed it off at first 'Cause I didn't know how much My little girl had been hurt Nor the thing that she had seen I wasn't ready, when I said, 'You could tell me' And she said, Chorus Alyssa lies to the classroom Alyssa lies every day at school Alyssa lies to the teachers As she tries to cover every bruise 3rd Verse My little girl laid her head down That night to go to sleep As I stepped out' the room, I heard her say A prayer so soft and sweet, 'God bless my Mom and my Dad And my new friend Alyssa Oh, I know she needs you bad, because' (Repeat Chorus) Bridge I had the worst night 'a sleep in years As I tried to think of a way to calm her fears I knew exactly what I had to do But when we got to school on Monday I heard the news 3rd Verse My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad The lump in my throat grew bigger With every question that she asked Until I felt the tears run down my face And I told her that Alyssa Wouldn't be at school today Tag Chorus 'Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom She doesn't lie anymore at school Alyssa lies with Jesus Because there's nothin' anyone would do Tag Tears filled my eyes When my little girl asked me why Alyssa lies Oh Daddy Oh Daddy, tell me why Alyssa lies |

You don't have to call him Johnny Paycheck... But it would be more accurate. ETA: Leave the room for a few seconds and get beat twice, I swear... |
To quote David Allen Coe and to all you anti country music asshats out there,
"MOTHERFUCKER, COUNTRY MUSIC IS ABOUT LIFE". |
FYI: Coe wrote it, Paycheck sang it. |
But so is cRAP, G |

Hell, yeah I love that song. It's one of those top 10 that gets played everytime I'm listening to music. That and "When I Get Where I'm Going" Anything by Brad Paisley is fantastic. |

Could you please make your text bigger, I can barely read what ya got there. As for being about life, that's a wonderful thing. But if life is that depressing, ya don't need to be reminded about it on the radio. I can listen to an AM station for that. |

There are some good rocking country songs, but it seems like every artist always has to have a few sad ones too..

Southern rock, kinda related to country.
After one of my friends got married, the first song that came on the radio when I left the church to go to the reception was this: I been run down, I been lied to, I dont know why I let that mean woman make me a fool. She took all my money, wrecked my new car. Now shes with one of my goodtime buddies, Theyre drinkin in some crosstown bar. Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel, Like I been tied to the whipping post, Tied to the whipping post, Tied to the whipping post, Good lord, I feel like I'm dyin. My friends tell me, that Ive been such a fool, And I have to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin you. Drown myself in sorrow, and I look at what youve down. But nothin seems to change, the bad times stay the same, And I can't run. Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel, Like I been tied to the whipping post Tied to the whipping post, Tied to the whipping post, Good lord, I feel like I'm dyin. Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel, Like I been tied to the whipping post Tied to the whipping post, Tied to the whipping post, Good lord, I feel like I'm dyin. --Whipping Post, by the Allmann Brothers Band |

They both done it. Depending on a lot of factors, at any one time, sometimes I prefer the Paycheck version, other times the DAC version. |

99% of the crap they play on country radio is NOT country music. It's disgusting cookie cutter bullshit pop music. Rascall Fags, your assortment of tramp hos, Queef Urban, Hack Ingram, it makes me sick.
If you want some country music, turn that shit shit off. Hank Williams Hank Williams Jr. Hank Williams III - He's apparently quite hoarse in the video early George Strait early Garth Brooks Clint Black, usually Dwight Yoakam Waylon Jennings Merle Haggard David Allan Coe Willie Nelson Johnny Cash (trendy and cliche to like him nowadays) |
I don't normally get worked up over songs, but this one brought a tear to my eye...also Brad Paisley - "When I get where I'm going" gets me a little worked up too because it was the first song i heard after I got the news that my grandpa passed away. No matter what mood you're in, country music has a song for it. |

Country Music used to be awesome, just about rural life and heartache but good times. The best part is the humor.....(Thank God And Greyhound)
That take this job and shove it(DAC)song writer verses who You remember making it popular is the same with many CW songs.
Most anyone that ever heard Johnny Cash sing Sunday morning coming down, doesn't think of Kriss K. Bob |

I'm much like Hardshell in that Country is second to Christian music, though I prefer Contemporary Christian and do not appreciate any type of Gospel.
One of the nice things about working for myself is that I can schedule my hours so my homeowners are gone when I'm working and I can crank the radio. Usually I have rock on to help keep the rythm, but yesterday I was listening to country tiling a tub surround, radio blasting, singing along, much to the annoyance of Beth who was playing helper for me (I can't carry a tune in a bucket. My singing gags maggots). There was a new song that came on I'd never heard before, and it was just KICK ASS. It starts with the singer going home and drinking with his buddies, when one of them opines there is "something different" about him. The lyrics continue and are something like, "I've been to a place where they hate me. They hate me for who I am and where I'm from. They try to kill me because I'm one." Something like that. Anyway, it was about a kid who just got back from Iraq and was forever changed by the reality of war. The song had me thinking "100-yard stare" and PTSD. I love those those songs. "Have we forgotten" is another great one. "You're leading me" (A small child asking his father to quit drinking because he stumbles and embarrasses the boy when everyone stares and whispers). There's another one about a small girl whose dad is a drunk and mom does drugs, and dad eventually shoots mom and she gets taken away by the state and eventually adopted. She goes to Sunday school for the first time, sees a picture of Jesus on the cross, and says, "I don't know who that man is on the cross, but I know that he got off. Because he was right there holding me as I hid behind the couch the night my mommy died" (paraphrased). If that doesn't bring a tear to your eye you're not human. Truly some of the country music contains some of the most powerful, emotinally-charged lyrics of any music. The "honkey Tonk Ba Donk A Donk" crap is NOT country. Never was, never will be. It's junk. Getting drunk over the loss of a woman is best done to "Yabba Dabba Do" by George Jones. Shared many a night with a fifth of JD, tears in my eyes, misery my company wearing out that song on repeat. Patty Loveless' "Here I am" is powerful. "Letters from home." Too many good ones out there to mention. For feel good, "Bubba shot the jukebox last night." "I'm going to miss her" (choosing between the wife and going fishing, LOL). And no one has mentioned Kenny Rogers yet! The 80's country was definately the best! |
I don't dislike Country music, but darn there are some sad songs.
Christmas before last, I was listening to the radio in the car and this song came on about a little boy who went into a shoe store to buy his mommy some shoes because she was so sick and he thought she was going to be seeing Jesus very soon and wanted her to look nice for Him. Something about a man in line helping him buy them because he didn't have enough money... I cried like a little baby, had to pull over. Damn, I'm tearing up as I'm thinking about it. |
I cant listen to country, its irritating and some is depressing.
Thats just me |

There's a tear in my beer
'Cause I'm cryin' for you, dear You are on my lonesome mind Into these last nine beers I have shed a million tears You are on my lonely mind I'm gonna keep drinkin' until I'm petrified And then maybe these tears will leave my eyes There's a tear in my beer 'Cause I'm cryin' for you, dear You were on my lonely mind Last night I walked the floor, and the night before You were on my lonely mind It seems my life is through and I'm so goshdarn blue You were on my lonely mind I'm gonna keep drinkin' till I can't move a toe And then maybe my heart won't hurt me so There's a tear in my beer 'Cause I'm cryin' for you, dear You were on my lonely mind Lord, I've tried and I've tried But my tears I can't hide You were on my lonely mind All these blues that I've found Have really got me down You are on my lonely mind I'm gonna keep on drinkin' till I can't even think 'Cause in the last week I ain't slept a wink There's a tear in my beer 'Cause I'm cryin' for you, dear You were on my lonely mind I've got a good woman at home who thinks I do no wrong But sometimes lord, she just ain't always around And you know that's when I fall, I can't help myself at all And I get whiskey bent and hell bound Play me some songs about a ramblin' man, put a cold one in my hand, 'cause you know I love to hear those guitar sounds Don't you play 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' cause I'll get all balled up inside And I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound Sure enough about closing time, (I'm) about stoned out of my mind And I end up with some honky-tonk special I found Just as sure as the morning sun come, thinking of my sweet girl at home And I need to get whiskey bent and hell bound Play me some songs about a ramblin' man, put old Jim Beam in my hand 'cause you know I still love to get drunk and hear country sounds But don't you play 'Your Cheatin' Heart' cause that'll tear me all apart I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound Yeah, old Hank's songs always make me feel low down |

For me, music is about ambience and mood. I can't listen to only one type, and there are days I can't stand some of what I would otherwise enjoy if my mood was just a little different. I like soft jazz when reading with the lights down low and the oil lamps lit, or when I'm studying/researching/writing. I like country when I'm slightly meloncholy and just not into the rock and roll beat. When I'm happy to the point of slight euphoria, I'll crank 7-Dust as loud as I can get it. If I just feel like crying, The Carpenters or The Kingston Trio. Sometimes Jim Croche, such as "Time in a Bottle." If I'm being silly, I go with the silly music like King Missle's "Detachable Penis" or Eminem's "Without Me." If I want to get drunk, put in a big dip, and shoot some darts, I listen to -80's country. When Beth and I are riding around in the truck, it's usually on Contemporary Christian - and mostly KLOVE, which I also listen to on the computer via streaming audio. Thanks to this thread, I just turned off the news and put on some country. "Start Living" is on now, which is good song about priorities. Begins with, "Under an old brass paperweight... is my list of things to do today..." And it goes on how he forgoes all that to spend time with his kids, take a walk, say a prayer, etc. Good morning music, IMHO. |
