An Afghani friend once told me his experiences as a teenager during the Soviet campaign in his country.  Abe worked for the Mujahideen.

My friend's job was to befriend Soviet soldiers for the purpose of acquiring small arms - AKs and ammo, RPGs, etc. from them.  His youthful appearance, good looks, exceptional command of Russian, and sunny personality were well suited for his mission.

He had no money, but hashish and opium were plentiful in his area.  There was plenty of heroin, too.  The going rate for an AK and a brick of ammo for about an ounce of opium or a quarter pound of hashish.  He was able to obtain numerous weapons by barter, leaving the Soviets disarmed and stoned, often addicted.

That's what the Afghans call "chemical warfare".  Americans heading that way should take heed.
