I have a hat that I really like and would like to clean it up, but I do not want to ruin it. What is the best way to do this?

buy one of the cheap plastic things that keeps the shape and put the hat in the dishwasher.

A clean, old hat is useless though. Good character comes from years of debris, dirt, blood, sweat, urine, more blood, some tears and some tears.

Blood and hair will most likely embed into the lustrous grain of your higher-end bat.
Even when cleaned, DNA from bodily fluids can seep deep into that wonderful Ash.

I'd recommend a good surface scrubbing with a green-scrub pad, followed by a deep soak in bleach and then ammonia.

This will dry the Ash and distort its surface texture, so be sure to use a good oil to bring your bat back to a glossy, smooth surface. You may have to refinish, as well.

I've got a couple nice older ones that aren't made anymore.

In my case, I didn't buy an extra "2002 Stanley Cup Champions" hat so now I need to clean the old one.

Hat with an H.

Should be able to get the evidence off my Chargers ball-cap after the last game with the Raiders though.

Place the hat on a Hippy's head.

Fill bucket with laundry detergent and Oxy-clean.

Dump bucket on Hippy.

Rinse repeatedly with 2,500 psi pressure washer.

Dishwasher or clothes washer (not dryer) and put a towel where your head goes to keep the shape.

Do what the guy says, get one of those plastic form things and put it in the dishwasher. My dad, brother, and all their cap wearing friends do this. The caps come out clean and crisp.

soak in Oxyclean in the sink for a day. Hand wash with fresh Oxyclean. Let it drip dry hanging on the faucet. Dont use heat to dry, it will shrink.

I tuck the bill into the hat itself. Make the strap tight and wash. Works well for me.

I spray mine down with my favirite cleaner and place in the top rack of the dishwasher. works everytime. Let them air dry- no dryer...

Drop in washing machine along with shirts or pants.

Allow to dry in one of those plastic, clamshell shaper thingies. Or, you can use a wadded up towel to keep the shape.
