Reporter on NPR around noon said the unofficial estimate is 40,000 dead. Apparently the authorities don't want to confirm this estimate, as it might be too upsetting for the public. (Like, how much more upset could we get?)

We may never know how many died.

does it get higher each day as the learn more..or so the public can adjust?

the 1000 or so estimated dead the first day seemed absurd to anyone i knew who watched the collapse.

10000 seemed at least realistic this morning. now we're up to 20000. it still seems optimistic.

The N.Y. port authority estimated 20 to 30 thousand.
And don't forget those lost at the Pentagon.
Very sad indeed.

No, Bush said "thousands" in his speech the first day. Could be 2000-50000 if the towers were full.

Numbers on the Pentagon casualties keep going down which is great.

The Mayor gave a number of 4763 unaccounted for as of two hours ago.
He also stated that it could be higher or lower.

I think the press has been gagged on this. You'll see very low estimates until right before we retaliate. Then the real (high) numbers will be publicised so that public sentiment/outrage will be at it's highest when we start lighting them up. No matter to me, 1 or 100,000 I'm pissed enough already.
